Our 8 year old granddaughter is coming to visit and would "Just die, to ride a horse." We know of the horse back tours of Waipio and in Kohala. Looking more for something like a pasture ride. Horse as we've been told she's "way to old for a pony ride."

There's the Pana'ewa Equestrian Center next to the zoo and I've seen horses near Pahoa dump. Not sure if this helps...

If you don't mind a trip to the Kona side these people seem to have a very kid friendly set up judging by their facebook page.

I was horse crazy as a kid and they would have made me much happier than the "paniola" rides geared towards adults that are offered in Waimea and Kohala. Good luck finding something that works for your granddaughter.

Mahalo Carol: we'll check them out. Really would like to stay Eastside as crisscrossing the island really eats up a vacation.

Dick,
Not local, sorry, but we used to go riding at Dahana Ranch near Waimea. It's definitely pasture riding and we even used to herd cattle, it was a lot of fun and they had a pretty good set up although it's not cheap. Link is here:

Pa'aina Ranch in Mountain View used to do ATV rides and horseback rides. They used to have a big truck parked near Hilo Coffee Mill advertising their rides. They're located off of Kulani.
