Tiffany Edwards Hunt running for Council

Just learned that Tiffany Edwards Hunt will be running for the Puna Mauka County Council seat currently held by Zendo Kern. Should be interesting.

I guess that is as good as any reason to donate campaign funds to Zendo Kern (who I don't like either) and I don't even live in his district.
I do not want to even imagine the disastrous laws and regulations she would attempt to get passed.

Your post articulates to a perfect "T" the core issue with Hawaii voters.

A complete lack of understanding of the candidate, no interesting in listening to the candidate and the general malaise of keeping a do nothing and absent incumbent in place because of a perceived "fear" of what somebody said that somebody said that the candidate will do.

At least we have gone away from electing a person based upon the biggest fruit hat one can wear.

Sorry to say - but Tiffany would do much much better than the last 3 incumbents ever could. As she could be absent 100% more than the current office holder to accomplish that!

My assumptions are based upon each and every elected Council Member - going back several elections - as well as my personal knowledge of Tiffany Edwards Hunt.

Can you articulate to me what ANY council member - in say the last 3 councils has done for the average Hawaii County resident?

Can you also articulate where and then what Zendo Kern has done for the District 5 resident?

This is indeed going to be an interesting race. Politics (as it is known today, as there are very few "Statesmen" left, IMO) is a learned experience.

Tiffany Edwards Hunt has shown she is not afraid of confrontation, digging into an issue, displays her personal opinions without concern of public backlash, and has been a part of Puna for years.

Given her experience in the media world, the inner works of a Council office (working with Naeole), and her personal dedication to what she believes is important speaks to her credit.

I wish her the best. This is a tough neighborhood to represent. Personally, I have known her for years. Don't always agree with her position. With a little grooming, she'd serve Puna well, and may be able to make changes to benefit the Puna district.

Ken, I agree with your statement on a few levels. It's apparent those who dislike her style or demeanor, will purposely vote against her, and for an opponent that may not have Puna's best interest at heart (just like many others have stated on other threads here in other races).

That is the issue. It is all about her and not what the majority of the constituents will want. Then, when she doesn't get her way, she will publicly cry and post a little story on her blog about how upset she is.

How is this different from any other politician?

Example: constituents wanted more "sustainability" in the form of Bill 96 and/or SB2274, and less "wasted police overtime" with the LLEP ordinance; lawmakers even paid plenty lip service to these issues. I think some time was even wasted on the GMO issue. Nothing changed, but we keep electing new "representatives"...

I think the question for Puna in terms of both council races will be this: are we better served by the current incumbents, who should be over their first term learning curves, or is there a new candidate who brings enough to the table to make up for their learning curve? This does assume both incumbents run again.

With two counselors from Puna we should be able to get some of the things we need, if they would work together to build the base of a power block. Hilo historically gets a lot of goodies because the Hilo counselors worked together, were effective in wheeling and dealing with other counselors, and had a solid power block. I haven't seen that from our current Puna reps, but any new counselor seems to take most of their first term learning the ropes, and if we keep having 1 term counselors, Puna will not get much.

I like Tiffany personally, and I think with her what we see is what we will get, there are no hidden agendas, it is all right there on the table. That is a rare quality in someone involved in politics, in fact it has created a certain amount of ammunition for others to use against her in this race, but at least we can see her strengths and weaknesses, which may not be the case with other candidates.

I don't live in that district, but I do want us to have 2 counselors representing Puna who will work together to get what Puna needs. The dividing line runs right through downtown Pahoa, you would think the 2 counselors could at least work together on issues related to the needs of Pahoa, but we have seen little evidence they even talk to each other, much less work together!
