Not the Netflix show, the one in Seaview...

Burned to the ground this morning, as far as I know no casualties or damage to adjacent properties.

From police media report:

Hawai#699;i Island police are investigating a suspicious fire Monday morning in Puna.

At 9:15 a.m. Monday (May 12) officers responded to a structure fire on the 12-7000 block of Akanikolea Street in the Kalapana Seaview Estates subdivision.

By the time police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene, the three-story house had already burned to the ground.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are investigating the fire and have not ruled out arson.

Police ask anyone with information about this case to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Police have begun an arson investigation into a fire that destroyed a controversial home in Kalapana Seaview Estates this morning.

Firefighters from the Pahoa Fire Station arriving at the home at 12-7037 Akanikolea St. at 9:40 a.m. found the unpermitted, three-story building engulfed in flames.

Norma Jean Ream, who lives on Mapuana Avenue, the coastal Puna subdivision’s main road, said she called 911 after hearing what sounded like muted explosions and loud voices from the scene.

Ream said the fire appeared to start at the top of the structure.

“We went out and the top of the house was high in flames,” she said. “It burned its way down.”

Ream said her son overheard a young man telling authorities that he rented the top of the building to store items that included ammunition and a propane tank. He reportedly also lost a computer and other belongings in the fire.

The home had drawn the ire of some Seaview residents because of its ramshackle appearance.

It was also the subject of a January 2012 newspaper article which said neighbors of the home were critical of the county for not doing more to force the owner of the building, currently listed as Charles Collins, to adhere to county building codes.

You can't pay firefighters enough, asking them to risk their lives to put out a fire without knowing some "renter" uses the third floor of a building as a munitions depot and explosive canister storage facility. Even if the firemen don't enter the building, from 30 feet in the air bullets and the shrapnel from a propane tank could fan out across a pretty wide area.

Yikes. I do have mixed feelings. On one hand it was horrible... On the other hand a family just lost their home.

Dayna, don't feel too bad. This wasn't anyone's home - even the owner/builder described it as a three story tool shed. Google "Seaview House of Cards" to learn why no one in Seaview is shedding a tear over its demise.
