Tropical fish collector allegedly attacks activist
#1
From West Hawaii Today:

"Maui resident Rene Umberger was diving at Keawaiki on Thursday, documenting the reef and two aquarium fish collectors at work, when one of the fish collectors noticed her and began swimming toward her.

β€œI was 30 or 40 feet away, approaching slowly,” Umberger said Monday. β€œHe turns around and he snaps. With no warning, he charges me. He swam up and went straight for my regulator and ripped it out of my mouth.”"

Interestingly there were a few underwater photos published of the event and I could find no fish in any of the pictures. Reef with no fish.

Personally I think the harvesting of tropical reef fish should be banned.

I'd see the fish collectors shipping at air cargo in Hilo off and on a few years ago. Pallets full of cardboard boxes, each holding plastic bags full of tropical fish. I couldn't believe how many they caught and shipped at one time.

Roosters and tropical fish. Export should be banned.

You can see him ripping the regulator of her in the video. That is crazy. I hope they find him. Who would want to dive in the vicinity of that psychopath?

One could easily argue that is was attempted murder!

Yes, the banning of fish collecting is way past due.

So to put things in perspective, it was just a fish hugger or "activist" that was the target of attempted murder. We can all go home now.

To be fair in reporting, these divers have been harassing the reef ecosystem.
