home surveillance cameras
#1
I have noticed a few posts with people saying they have home surveillance cameras. I think it would be nice for those who do have them to list the brand, price and maybe some standout features on each system.

Ease of installation and setup, use, length of time, recommendations on do's and don'ts ect.
There are so many different kinds and brands, so many reviews on each with good and bad. It would be nice to have some local people chime in on their systems and what they like about them. I have been interested in a small set up for a couple of years now.

Just a thought.

Our system is now a 1-1/2 years out of date, Q-See QC804NVR4Channel 2TB - 2 neighbors have & our range overlaps, so the 4 channel is not to bad for a nice chunk of our corner area coverage

2TB gives ~10days H D 4Channelcoverage.

We haven't really used the IP, once for a neighbor who was out of town, but have no idea what they saw...

It is a "plug & play" to a point, every thing is mouse & menu...camera install would be based on your location (we have eave raceways, so real easy to run the cables.

Our system really works because there is system overlap & a semi alert dog... Not sure I would want to totally rely on 4 channels, & even on 1 recorder...there are always the what ifs...

I would never have dreamed I would want a system... until a vehicle was chased into our car & the police in pursuit had no ID on the vehicle & tried to claim they had stopped being in pursuit on the HWY, ~1/2 mi from our house, and there were eyewitnesses that saw the 2 police cars in our neighborhood 1/2 block from us, right after hearing our car getting crunched...

That night I REALLY wanted a system & we bought right after finding out our insurance would do nothing for us unless we had an police ID on the vehicle that hit our car...& after I had to prove I was NOT in the car (WAS asleep at home when it happened) after the ticket was written as a moving violation with me in the car!

Edit to add resolution info:
Daytime, we can read the license of our neighbors car in the drive across the street (Nighttime B/W resolution is good, but not as high, mainly due to the color limits)
The old youtube on the system that explains things like the notification & zoom features, sold us on it (and the complete system was under a thousand normally...

And it was on sale & with us buying 2 systems we were able to get even more of a break, even though that was 1 1/2 yrs ago...cannot imagine that electronics like this going UP in price!):

Though I only bought a GPS tracker from them, not a video surveillance system. They seemed pretty reputable, stuff came quickly and they were responsive. They seem to have special and slashed priced around the holidays, if you can wait that long. They seem to be more for the DIY person who just wants to buy the hardware and set up a custom system.

Last week I installed a Swann four camera unit from Costco online. It came right to my door. It is a model DVR 1550. The DVR is 1 TB.

I have it set on motion detection only so it only starts recording
when it sees motion. It also sends photos to my iphone when an event occurs. The customer support from Swann is first class, which is good, since the setup can get a little complicated.

I feel much more secure in having the system, and having the cameras visible around the perimeter of the house also acts as a deterrent. This unit will accept up to 8 cameras total. The delivered price was $350.00

We have a Samsung 4-camera system. The pictures have amazing resolution day AND night. Camera setup was easy; tweaking the system for online use was a bit of a learning curve for me.

Could anybody comment on resolution of camera pic? Some of the cameras I hear are a joke when it comes down to seeing clearly enough to tell if they are wearing glasses, or what the car license plate reads out, while others you can see rings on their fingers! Mahalo in advance!

To capture a license plate you would need a camera that costs about $1000. To capture the plate on a moving car you are talking thousands more. For one camera.

Oh. I guess that bet is off. What's the point if you can't clearly identify? Any cameras close enough in resolution to do the job? Or are game cameras better?

It seems from my reading posts that even if you had a face or a color and model of a vehicle, the police would be little help. A fence and a gate would be a better investment IMO.
