Safeway gas
#1
Hmm is it worth it? Most of the time yes. If I fill up, my little car can hold about 12 gallons. At ten cents less than other places per gallon that comes out to...hmm $1.20 savings. Worth it only if I don't have to wait in line 15 minutes. How are they able to charge less than everyone else in town?

We gas up there whenever we can. Is it only ten cents less now? In the past, when I compared, it seems like it was 18 to 20 cents less. Also, one of the stations on the waterfront in Hilo has been just a bit higher than Safeway, but much less than other stations in the area.

It was 10 cents last I checked. Probaly more now. Been awhile now. I guessing people who live off grid and use a generator save big there too.

We live off grid,we utilize our gen sets on more than 2 days of cloudy weather, when solar is not an option.
We also shop at safeway on 5 dollar fridays.
Having their club card allows our ohana to save on average 21 cents a gallon on regular gas and when we have enough on our club card we get an additional 10 cents off a gallon,so the savings is 31 cents a gallon. On one of our trucks it takes 30 gallons to fill er up and the other truck is 42 gallons for the 4x4.We keep the tanks on 3/4 to full.
We do not mind waiting 15 mins to save 20 bucks per week.
or 80 bucks a month or 960 bucks a year on average.
Plus safeway has brand new tanks as with the station on bay-front is below sea level and often floods and may have water and other particulates in their fuel / tanks.
Only in america do people shop where a penny makes a difference as far as fuel goes.If we are staying in puna,we get our fuel a BJs in Kurtistown ,as that is where our P.O.Box stay.

last Thursday $3.91 for regular with a safeway card. $4.10/gal average elsewhere. It's what is called a loss leader. Safeway makes little or no profit from gas sales. They make their profit when you shop in the store.

According to hawaiigasprices.com, the price per gallon today for the Hilo safeway is $3.91. If you have additional gas rewards available, you can save more per gallon.

I've never had to wait 15 or 20 minutes to fill up there...maybe I've been lucky so far.

It's great marketing by Safeway. Who doesn't respond to savings of .10 to .12 cents a gallon. This is only for cash purchases. However many already get this savings via credit card gas 3% rebates. So it equals out for many of us but is much easier to see and effective marketing.

Then there is the added saving of $.10/gallon for each $100 purchase at Safeway. However, for long time customers of Safeway this is not as good of the $10 coupons they use to give for $75 purchases. After all using a average fill of 10 gallons this new rebate only equals $1.00 and that hardly compensates of the insane pricing at Safeway. It is easy to pay $1 to $2 more per item there than elsewhere if one isn't careful.

Then the cost of a trip to Hilo. For me at 45 miles roundtrip or 1.5 gallons of gas; a cost of $6.00. The best discount savings I got was $.50/gallon or $5.00. It felt good but how much did I really save?

As with all things from Safeway one needs to be very very careful or you will not come out ahead. I don't like their strategy but have to admire it.

Safeway sets their fuel prices from HQ in Oakland Calif.
At 2am to 4am Tuesday and Thursdays the price drops an additional 10 cents a gallon.Only the last two weeks of any month.
They also have less ethanol corn syrup in their blends .
Diesel is cheaper as well.
Yes true, they make up the loss leader in fuel discount by selling costly items in the store,we only shop on their loss leaders
in store .

Go online to their site and see if 2x rewards on fuel is available there yet. They just started it around their corporate office "ring" of stores, and using Chevron fuel. Able to use rewards at a Chevron, but can't use Chevron card at Safeway. Mimosa's smart one, keeps vehicles at least half full in case of crisis.

Worth it if I am in the neighborhood anyways.
