“Hawaiian Electric has been able to get away with these prices for most of the 20th century and into the 21st century because of politics. One of their biggest expenditures is their government relations division. They have friends in the Legislature.

Talk about stating the obvious!

Hellco, is one of our communities biggest dream killers. One of the biggest reasons most of Puna children will get free lunch this year. The poor in California will now have access to some of the worlds best buds for free. Yet the poor in Puna can't afford to turn their dryers on to kill mold. Most poor folks in Puna can't pay rent so county housing pays. The government will probably pay hellco bills for the poor here in Puna, oh wait they already do?. Hellco doesn't mind Puna the way it is now, so why expect changes. Sorry for the negativity just found the article gross even though I new it all along.

What's next? The Children are sweating and can't afford AC? Sorry, but AC and Electric Driers should be banned here. No one should be using them.
Do you know how much green house gasses / pollution those put out? Ah well... Humans are doomed anyway...
Carry on...

Ericlp, thanks for the insight about greenhouse gas. I did not think about the dryer like that. Each load of cloths we dry cost about $2.00, we do 4 loads a day. We hang some on lines outside to dry if the weather is nice, not this month though.
The other day I was following a hellco truck out of Pahoa when I noticed a woman hitch hiking and giving the finger to the guys from hellco. For a light company they seem to be on the dark side within our community?. I wonder how high the electric bills are for restaurant businesses in today's times?. This may be part of the reason we don't have better places to eat in Pahoa?.

We need to write the PUC, the Gov., and the Federal entities that will be able to help break this monopoly. Our community is one that is suffering the most from the cost of electricity.
HEI is in trouble right now, and I would never "kick a dog when it's down", however, this "rabid dog" needs to be kicked out of Hawai'i.
We need a true "public utility". One that is owned by the people.

If I want AC in my house and I can afford it, why does that bother you? If I want a large SUV to carry my family around instead of cramming them into a tiny car, same thing.
There are way too many people (liberals?) trying to control every aspect of our lives here.
