The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum opened a new exhibit, "Hawaii by Air." It documents the beginning of air travel to the islands and it's later development. Lots of links on their website, including the first flights, and the selling of Paradise to tourists.

Also, early flights to Hilo started flying before there was an airport. Inter-island Airways provided outrigger canoes to bring passengers to shore!
