I heard rumors of the Saturday market reopening at the Hawaiian Acres community center. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, why did it shut down in the first place?
Gosh, so much going on with lower puna and the lava I almost feel guilty posting this. Seems so unimportant compared to Pahoa's situation.

There were no permits. As it stands now, they have to complete some unfinished work and make proper arrangements before the market can legally be opened again.
I heard a rumor that people jumped the gun last weekend.

I've seen this after your posts before. What does it mean ? I've asked several people, and they have widely differing answers. Thanks.

It's my signature line; an ASKII picture of fish. I've been using it since...well, since people used ASKII pictures because bandwidth was so small you couldn't embed real pictures.
Is it easier to see that it's fish this way?

seems like there is a minuscule handful of people that doesn't want to follow the rules. the board has stated that there are things that need to be done before the market can open. need to obtain insurance , set up the parking area , obtain permits for tents, put together a set of rules for the market , etc.
also the community center does not have a permit to operate as a community center . the permit is expired by 15 years and at the time it expired it was for a single family dwelling with one bathroom . so the building permit needs to be brought into compliance , making it a community center from residential , and correcting the changes made from one bathroom to two bathrooms legal. also the firehouse has permit problems that have to be corrected.
in actuality the insurance that is on the building might not be valid if something were to happen as the permits are 15 years expired.
so there is much, much more important things to be done to protect the community center and resident owners from liability before taking on another huge liability like the farmers market. it would be nice if people would respect the community and seriousness of the problems that exist and not add to it right now.

So long as this "miniscule handful" includes our local government, "the rules" will continue to be enforced at whim, such that "many people" don't see any need to respect those rules.
An excellent example of this runs right past the community center: 8 Road is "County Recognized" (and open to the public) as an Emergency Access ... but for some reason County won't maintain the pavement. I'm sure it's in "the rules" somewhere.

County insists that the farmers' market "follow the rules" while (with the other hand) ignoring the "rules" when it comes to the road the leads to that very farmers' market.
To condemn some people for "not wanting to follow the rules" is hypocritical.

I've heard some old wicked witch who raises donkeys that lives on 9 or 10 road somewhere was responsible dismantling the market on some kind of legality issue. Why would a citizen of our community want to intentionally ruin such a good thing as the market? God only knows.
