I say go for it, Obie. Be sure to report back and let us know if they shoot you.

Go for it, Obie.

The phenomenon (lava) activates the curious mind. As long as you are not trespassing, or venturing into unsafe territory (those little, or big [:0], methane explosions will rock you), go for it! Take a little "ho'opuku" to share that you are showing reverence and respect in your curiosity.

It is those who tread on this aina (illegally) and collect $200+ per head in the process, who may experience something that is not so pleasant. Just saying.

Waiting with a spam musubi for you upon return, when you report your experience. [Big Grin]

There is a police officer (armed) & four national guard troops stationed at Apa'a. Last week they didn't even allow a kid on a bike who lived on La'au go home until family came to get him. No I.D. on his person.

I don't know what instructions the police have for letting people through, but I would guess if you're not on the list of residents, you may run into some resistance.

As you say, Apa'a is a public road, or was...

Obie this sounds like a great idea, time and place please. Can't figure out how to stop time yet, so wasting time makes no sense. An experience like this could help many.
Your suggestion of walking up apaa seems good, better than the ninja's jumping the pool fence and going out the back of the unfinished park (at night). Much better viewing the lava at night though. Count me in.

As much as I believe in protecting the privacy of those residents in the path, I'm all for a little civil disobedience. That being said, you better wear a hard hat in case the residents don't appreciate your selfless offer to assist them.

Probably an easier bet (in terms of enforcement) following one of the trails from off Ainaloa Drive or G Road (HA). There's quad tracks etc., but not a good idea if you aren't good in the bush. Could also easily end up like the people who made the news with their golf clubs and egg beaters (the big trespassing story).

Following Isselle, obie posted;
"Our neighborhood has been devastated. We have seven homes that are totally destroyed. Many other homes have serious damage. The tide pools are off limits to the public at this time because the road/parking area has been destroyed.We are not allowing public access.If you're driving a frontend loader or a dump truck you will be welcomed, otherwise we ask that you please stay away."

snark reminisces;
We have a right to shoreline access. I just thought I'd stroll down there and have a looksie at the aftermath of that awesome natural event. What are they gonna do, shoot me?

They've all got tasers. They'd probably do that first.
