It's because of moments like this (see youtube link).
Recorded about a month ago, the clip is a musical snapshot of a place I love, a thin slice of life in Pahoa. Where else in the world can you stumble into your town's main parking lot (in our case Luquin's), commiserate with strangers, and enjoy a live, impromptu jam session? We were Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Can you feel the magic?

That's cool, but lava is knockin' on Pahoa's door. Maybe you should be singing Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" or "Buckets of Rain".
Dylan can't even sing "Knockin' On Heavens Door" anymore, nor can I, so nice job punafish, but....

We need some cowbell in Pahoa.

Yes, more cowbell for sure! I knew something was "off."
Edited to add: Love Dylan but he could never sing anything!
Actually they also sang Fire on the Mountain that night. (I'll try to find that clip and upload to youtube)

Another song I captured on my iphone that same evening. Forgive the poor video quality, it was dark. But still think it captures the spirit of the moment. And a more appropriate song, perhaps? Fire on the Mountain.

Great music clips.
There are so many ways to love Pahoa aren't there?
It's like when that guy came out of the young ohia forest in the movie Lava Field of Dreams, and asked the first person he encountered, "is this heaven?"
To which the the resident replied, "nope, it's Pahoa."

Thanks for posting Punafish!
That is definitely one of the (many)things I love about Pahoa!

Even though it may seem intolerable at times and unfair to us due to a high percentage of difficult marginalized folk including the able bodies who think food stamps/ebt cards are a long term entitlement......
I have always loved Pahoa and stayed here because there is nothing pretentious about it. This place is real and down to earth, thanks to Pele. Big investors and the materialistic as a general rule steer clear leaving us with a healthy local economy.
Regarding my comment about food stamps. Just so the able bodied know...scamming the system is not a victimless crime. IF you are able bodied your food stamp usage should be short and rare, only for times of emergency. Hawaii state lodging and excise taxes are very high for the self-employed and ironically go straight to the welfare system. Many people, including me drop our rates to compensate for the taxes hikes which can run up to 13.4% to keep the business flowing. I shop in the clearance section at the market.

Never imagined food stamps and ebt cards would come up in this thread. I was going for a more uplifting angle.
That said, it's a legit topic worthy of its own thread. Perhaps call it, "What I don't love about Pahoa"?

I meant to say, the taxes are very high for the CUSTOMERS of the self-employed here, most of which goes into the welfare system aka food stamps.
