question about portable dishwasher
#1
We have a newer HPM home and it came without a dishwasher or place to put one. I've looked at different options and without a kitchen remodel (bank account says not in our future) our choices are either something that goes on the counter (not an option), under the sink (re-route plumbing and lose that cabinet space), or one of the portable units one wheels.

Ideas? Suggestions? Experiences?

Do they still make portables? Haven't seen one since I was a kid and every kitchen had one of them circle fluorescent lights

Aloha, terracore. One of my sons suggested choose from Home Depot list, as the ones he's worked with (not countertop for sure) are pretty good. The price range does vary, but at least Home Depot is here (turn over is good which makes for newer models in stock, for repairs, etc., if needed). Hope this helps:

*Disclosure - Son does not work for Home Depot. Does remodeling and upgrades of homes. I also have some mo'opuna who need to wash more dishes, so... [Big Grin] Oh wait, child labor laws. E kala mai. No can with the mo'opuna.

I have seen people use them like bread makers. Initially a good idea, initial use, then...

Main problem will be noise. You don't hear it in a show room unplugged. But in the quiet of a home?

Slowly you will be compromising. Only at night, only after big party, only in a blue moon.

Then you wonder why.

My dishwasher is named Greg. He makes the meal too.

Our house. which we bought in 2010, has no dishwasher. We have a double stainless sink with a disposal. Yes, we do them by hand. It's not so bad. And, we do live in Hawaii!!

I have a Kenmore portable dishwasher. Paid about 365.00 on sale at Sears about five years ago.
The top could be used as a chopping block, I do. If you do not have hot enough water it heats it up for you.
Two racks, bottom and top water shooters.
Works great and very reliable.
I recommend it!

Although you said countertop was not an option, I have this one. If you don't have that many dishes to clean, or don't like running a full-size only 1/2 full, this is a really nice unit. It is extremely quiet and does a really good job. Originally purchased it just for spoons, forks and glasses, but now use it like a full-size unit, plates and all. It does have a issue with plates over 11" in diameter, so keep that in mind. 10" plates are perfect in it.

We had 2 Kenmore portables with the wood 'countertop' on the mainland and they worked fine. The second one we bought from a thrift store for $50 and it worked for several years, until we moved here. The only caveat is that your faucet has to be one that the hoses will fit on, so you might have to change the faucet.

I too had a Kenmore and it worked great. My first job was in a pizza restaurant when I was in high school. Washing not only the regular dishes but the baked on crusty pans from the oven cured me of washing dishes by hand at an early age. It's not difficult at all to hook it up and use it. It also give you a little more counter space...
