Tropical Flower and/or plants group
#1
Would anybody be interested in a Tropical Flower group, with meetings, plant and information exchange, etc?

There's an orchid society, and a vireya society, but this could include anthurium, hibiscus, gingers, puakenikeni, and other fabulous flowers.

Would there be more interest if it were a tropical *plant* group, including monstera, taro, ti, and other foliage plants, as well as the flowers?

I'm trying to gauge interest before starting anything.

Id be interested in any native plant groups...

a good one to start would be the indigenous and endemic hibiscus group...
ie the Mallow Family of native plants in Hawaii, 23 total that are NOT extinct.
12 Hibiscus, 4 Hibiscadelphus, 1 Gossypium (cotton), 3 Abutilons, 2 Kokia (tree cotton), and 1 Sida in the family.

******************************************************************
save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Tropical yardscape, with rotating "species of the month" ... I'd sign up for that.

Rotating "species of the month" is a great idea! April is Anthurium, Monstera May, June Ginger...Endemic October, November Noni...or just feature species/plant type any month we think of it.

This is in the thinking stage for me, probably a few months before I do anything.
If someone else wants to get started sooner, go for it, just make sure you invite me!

I am totally naive regarding tropical plants BUT would love to listen, learn, etc. My husband is interested as well. My 20 year old autistic son will be arriving here shortly. He has almost completed his vocational training in landscaping. I think he would enjoy attending something like this to learn more.

Would novices be welcomed, or is this more for seasoned gardeners?

I would welcome all levels of gardeners. You never know who might have that one little bit of information that can solve a problem.

A trained landscaper would be a valuable addition!

Lee, PLEASE keep us posted on this! I'm smiling thinking about the prospects of learning more.
My husband is more interested in food bearing plants...but I like the pretty things. We went to the sale this past weekend. I was so happy to finally get some flowers to put out.

Thank you for posting this! Look forward to it!
