Aloha All!
While I have been reading through the forums for awhile, this is my first post! My family and I have been long time residents of Oahu and plan to finally relocate to the Big Island this summer. We are really looking forward to it! We have checked out the different neighborhoods in Puna and we really love what Hawaiian Acres has to offer, even after driving on some of the roads! Unfortunately, there seems to be more negative comments (roads, crime, etc.) about living in Hawaiian Acres than positive. Don't get me wrong, it is important that I am realistic and not disillusioned about living there. However, I would love to know what the residents of Hawaiian Acres love about their own neighborhood? Please share your thoughts! <3

I love the circus parade of people insisting that "something has to be done".
It's fine the way it is, it's not changing in our lifetimes, if you don't enjoy it, there are other subdivisions.
I love the roads: they are safe for children and pets.

I enjoy the relative privacy here. I like tbe people I live next to. I like how many endemic plant species there are here. I'm proud that the people who live here care about their community and are passionate about it. I like hearing the occasional clip clop of a passing horse. I laugh when I hear people karaoking into the night, or hooting as they land a jump on their four wheelers. It's nice to smell ginger and hear an ukulele floating on the breeze. I feel safe knowing everyone who drives down my road. When someone gets a new car they let everyone else know so there's nothing to worry over. And lastly there are so many different kinds of people here, you can find someone close by to help you with just about anything.

We enjoy the quietude of H.A.
The being off the grid aspects .
Nice neighbors .
Community watch.
Low crime.
Safe to walk and ride our horses
without a lot of speedy traffic .
We enjoy the rough roads and how seldom
they have any work done to them.
We enjoy going to the CC and attending meetings
of various sorts.
We enjoy taking the grand children to the CC play ground
or the Ainaloa long house play ground .
We enjoy being able to ingress all 3 entrances,be it
Ainaloa,S.Kulani / Rd 1 or Moho Rd or Rd 8.
The beauty of Rd 1 and S.Kulani is when the Kea'au crawl is backed up
we can either go into town or out of town on Steinbeck Hwy and over to the acres via N,Kulani / S. Kulani
We are happy that at our elevation at 4 n D - it is always rainier and cooler than Hilo town.
We like that we do not have to pay our HARC or HACA dues if we do not need to,but we do regardless as after all,it is OUR community.
Hope this is helpful.

I also love the roads; SLOW DOWN is a great slogan for our way too busy lives! I love the native plants, animals and birds! I love the sound of the wind thru the tops of the ohia-lehua. I love the rural feel without being too far away from other folks! I loved raising my 3 children in the Acres and having my grandchild be of this special place! I love the Abundance of wonderful, happy folks who live here!

yes, it truly is an awesomely beautiful place. i love the fact that our lots are just that little bit wider. that we have more rain than the coast, but much less than further up gets. we have the perfect self sustainable weather of paradise. it is cooler than the coast, but warmer that the top of the mountain. you will never need a fire, but might need a pair of warm slippers and an extra blankie some nights.

the quiet! my resident hawaiian hawk and owls. looking at the variations of colors when the ohia is blooming. wonderful neighbors who watch out for each other so we can spend a day out without worries. there are microclimates here, and differences in areas. look carefully at the lots, be sure to drive through at nite with your windows down also and take a listen. there are lovely spots in the acres, and then, some not so lovely. choose with care and join the community.

When we first moved here we lived in Hawaiian Acres. It is so large that (like many subdivisions) its hard to characterize. What you see in one section may be vastly different than what you see somewhere else.
In the end we settled on Orchidland. One end of Orchidland is up against Hawaiian Acres so in some respects the geography is not that different. In the end we preferred the effects of the mandatory road fees of Orchidland over the optional ones of HA, even though I am an outspoken critic of how mandatory road fees are levied and spent. HA did seem wetter and darker, and the coqui seemed worse, the large imported snails and buffos were definitely worse, but that might have just been the area we were living.

Live back on the forest reserve side. Have a nice view of the mountain, the ocean and, at night, the glow from the volcano. I like my neighbors, regardless of some of the negative comments of a few, it is a great place to live.

There are a lot of great things about the forest reserve side. One of them is pigs. Though to some, that is a negative. I've seen well manicured estates ripped to shreds in a very short period of time. Others enjoy the freezers full of meat.
