Blown Head Gasket on 95' Geo!

Greetings from rainy Hamakua,

A friend blew the head gasket on our 1995 Geo Tracker On island. There is water in the oil, I don't know if any heads are warped. I am not terribly "smart" regarding car engines. Is a blown head Gasket a "put her out to pasture" kind of thing with a 95' Geo...or can it be fixed with a backyard mechanic (he is too busy right now to look at her and we are off island)

A decent mechanic can fix a blown head gasket. Whether it's worth doing on a '95 geo is a question only you, your mechanice and your wallet can determine.

Pull a valve cover off and look at the wear points on the rockers for heavy scoring to give indication of what condition the lower 1/2 is. If no bad wear, flush all of water and oil ports within the engine with diesel completely and change head gasket, add new oil and cross fingers. Find a radiator at a junkyard, as tubes are generally too small and costly to mess with, unless you know a good radiator guy, and add new thermostat of course. Good luck!

Somebody gave me a free van with a blown head gasket. It wasn't worth fixing. I found some snake oil product that you could add to the crankcase to "fix" it. Of course it didn't fix it, but it did keep the van on the road for a few months.
