Interesting observation re: 130 improvements
#1
When they finally got most of the road opened up we noticed our gas mpg went from 29.8 to 31.2. We normally go to town about three times a week from lower HPP. Here's hoping this continues!

Over the last few years when I actually worked the occasional few weeks of sane work hours, my mileage always improved over the holiday period when the Keaau bottleneck became less of an issue. Usually around the 2-mpg level or so.

But what I'd give for this evening's commute back home to keep happening! I left work (Hilo) earlier than usual at around 4:30pm and was home 30-minutes later. Gas mileage be damned. I'm sure it'll increase which is great but the frustration level was way down.

Just like the old days!

Does anyone know if the Pahoa bound second lane restriction from 3-6pm is permanent?

I don't know for certain, but there are now "permanent" road signs saying it's open between 3 and 6pm.

If the traffic was only bad during those 3 hours I could understand...

The Pahoa bound second lane restriction from 3-6pm should start at 2pm because it starts backing up as soon as the schools get out.

It has to be; the shoulder lane is "substandard" per DOT guidelines, so cannot be open for full-time use.

That's okay we can contract isemoto to continue construction on 130 to widen the shoulder lane. They need something to do right?

Yes, right after that property has been acquired through eminent domain.

We were excited to see the flow of traffic be quite brisk yesterday Pahoa bound around 3:30 pm. Had doc appts in the afternoon (YUCK!) and dreaded the trip home for the next 4 weeks x 3 ea.

Made it home in 45-50 mins from Safeway. Never once got under 30-35.

I dont know about others experiences there but we were happy with our experience yesterday.
