Lower Hawaiian Acres - Internet /Mail Options
#1
Hoping someone in the lower Hawaiian Acres area might be able to answer a few questions.

1) I'm assuming the closest post office is Mt. View. If there are no PO boxes available, what are other options?

2) Internet options - I've heard most use Exede, Dish or DirectTV? Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Exede works good on Rd2, very happy with it, weve had it a couple months now...

Mail, you can get it in MtView, Kurtistown, Pahoa, or Keaau...
MtView if you are in NW part of HA is closer, otherwise Kurtistown is usually closer, or even Pahoa is closer if you are in the lower SE corner by Ainaloa...
But then again I get mine in Keaau, when I do my errands, plus they are open on Saturdays unlike the other 3...

in other words.. lower HA is closer to Kurtistown, if you mean lower as in elevation and not Rd number...

Something to be aware of it if your subdivision is not able to provide a mailbox, the Post Office must provide a PO Box for free. Sometimes the clerks are not aware of this so it helps to remind them, although you might have to use general delivery for a couple months while on the waitlist.

I dunno, I tried to ask the PO in Keaau about a FREE box when I was living in orchidland, they said no... Can't remember the reason why. Seemed like it was the same song and dance about this or that. So are they really giving away free boxes? How does one really show proof that you are living where you say you live? Couldn't I just walk in and say I live in Fern Forest... Where is my free Box? I know that some parcels have an address that I guess get's assigned after you pull a permit. Even tho, every lot has an address... Just could lots and numbers. Just curious what the PO does do to verify your lot address to give you a 'FREE' box?

Yes! Exactly what I meant.

Thanks so much for all the info. Very helpful!

Keaau PO seems to have longer lines, Mountain View PO does have the shortest hours.

Exact street address will vary depending on where the driveway goes; while the address may be assigned without permits, it will be mostly "imaginary" unless permits exist.

I got a free box in Volcano, so it does happen. Every year I have to fill out a paper for them to continue to give me the free box.

Years ago mailboxes in the subdivision were proposed. Predictably there was very vocal opposition to the concept. More of the "Don't build it and They won't come" mindset. In other words don't provide any infrastructure or other amenities that would make this a more desirable place to live because then people would want to move here. What could possibly go wrong with that thinking? Good for the short term maybe but buildout seems to be heading our way one way or another. Ultimately do you want to live in Mumbai or somewhere more functional.
Sorry for the rant.
