Might it not be practical to add even one more observatory to the peak of Mauna Kea? A Hawaiian observation heiau perhaps?
I'm not trying to be funny. There is a history with Mauna Kea. Perhaps the Hawaiian community might want to establish their own position amongst the stars upon at least equal footing. It could remain there after the others are long gone.
Would this be objectionable to the Hawaiian community? Or is it just too cold up there to consider such a thing?
Assume the best and ask questions.

inclusive vs. exclusive. the inclusive idea here sounds vastly more productive and definitely better for the community in more ways than one.

After the current observatories leave and remove the road and restore the natural area back, how would people get up there?

Sounds like a great idea.
Lhasa, Tibet, which was the center of Tibetan Buddhism is at the 11,975 foot elevation, so a sacred Hawaiian Observatory site on Mauna Kea at 13,678' isn't that much higher up.

I don't think that is a problem for us to answer.

The observatories already are heiau's, just most of the population hasn't come to that realization yet.
The plan now is decommission 3 observatories and they will be taken down to the pad level. Then 3 more state of the art will go in place of those. Also, Keck will have several more smaller ones around it on its allotted space. There will be no more new pad spaces after TMT.
Remember, some of the speculation around here is acting like the Hawaiian Kingdom was a done deal, and it is far, far from that. In the meantime, the technical kama'aina are going to keep proceeding into the future. Better to accept that TMT is the luakini po'okanaka heiau of Hawaii island.
