LCD or Plasma
#1
The old tube "crapped the bed" and I started looking for a larger TV. I did some basic research and in my price range ($1200-$1900), the best set I found was a Phillips LCD 1080p 42 inch@ circuit city for $1499. We went to circuit city and of course they didn't have one in stock but offered to order it for like $75. "I dont think so sucka, I needs this TV toooooo dayyyy fool"(Mr T impression). Cost Co was kinda close by so we went in to get 50 gallons of mayonaise,4000 count tampax box and like 300 extra large breakfast muffins(assorted). Well low and behold, Costco had the phillips 42 inch for $1100 but then I saw his bigger brother the 47" with all the bells and whistles for the same price as circuit city's smaller 42". In addition, the 47" was going on sale for a $100 off with a bogus costco coupon. For $100 off, my wife would sit and wait patiently for the second coming of Christ. I on the otherhand, will spend $100 bucks on dried apricots, tootsie rolls, twizzlers and a bucket of chicken without a blink of the eye. So we get the 47" loaded up on the cart and start for the register, when I realize I have only an ATM card and a travel Visa card on me. (Costco you suck for not taking Visa and having short working hours to create a false buzz) "Got damn" we had to leave costco and go to the bank and get 2 G's cash. we get the cash, head back to costco and get the TV.
Now lets chat about this TV. First words were "wow". The details are amazing and clear. No bad angles that make the screen look "grey". No rogue pixels that appear black on the screen, nada. The sound, is not "booming" out of the box but is decent. After hooking up the Bose 3-2-1 to the set it was like a mini movie theatre. I popped in the DVD kids movie "dinosaurs". Again, it was "wow" coupled with a "damn"(good damn, not bad) at the sound. I was watching some NBA game and my 10 year old made the comment " Dad, I can see the beads of sweat on the players foreheads". She also said "wow, you can actually see the people in the audience watching the game and recognize who they are". My 10 year old tends to get "stuck" when she watches TV. "Stuck" basically means the world is tuned out until you can break the trance with a mention of PS3 or pizza. She actually said it was child abuse to make her watch the small 20" in her room now. I told her of course to call the Cops but first pack up all that "hello Kitty" junk so we can have a yard sale. I warned her that jail has no TV at all, not even a lil ole 20". That killed all that "Cop talk".
Bottom line on the TV, Awesome ! 1080p, USB ports all that monkey ass stuff I'll never use but damn I got it.
I don't know about the brand name "Visio" but costco had a 50" plasma for $1000 but I seriously thought it was "too big". Any thoughts on the 50" Visio? or LCD vs plasmas in general ?

We bought a 42" Vizio 1080p LCD @ Costco a couple months ago for around $1K and I have to say it's been one of the best consumer electronics purchases I've ever made.

BTW, for those unfamiliar with Costco's practices, American Express is the only credit card they accept. Otherwise it's cash, check or debit card.

aloha,
Gene

Nate you might also check the energy require ment of a LCD vs Plasma. The LCD requires less helco I believe.

Hey Nate , good for you man nothing better than new dtv. You mentioned the old tube crapping out so I presume at best you were watching either cable or a digital sat signal. The movie dinosaurs was being played on a standard dvd or upconverting dvd yes? I mean you wouldn't of had an HDdvd with an old tube unless it was a hd tube. Any way 1080p can only be had through hddvd or blueray so at best you are seeing a 1080i signal or 720p which nothing to sneeze at. Sat. companies aren't able yet to produce that 1080p resolution, maybe oneday. So I guess what I'm saying is it can only get better.

We purchased the visio for our trip over and have been watching it for a while now it is a plasma and we like it fine I think they are abit less bright then lcd that is to say at night it doesn't quite look like your running a welder inside your home, as viewed from outside. ; ) I think what I like best is with the pip and rgb connection we can view programming and punaweb through wireless mouse and keyboard from the ole sofa. I also purchased Monster Cable's HDMI cable the lastest greatest gas charged jobbie about 130.00, i think, but let me tell you there is a very noticeable difference and have always opted for fiber optic audio needless to say, as you, the whole package kicks some serious buttock. Oh we bought the visio at Sears and went for the 42" because of the room size now and in the future it was 849.00 while everything else was at least 300.00 more. I'd definately reccomend the visio to anyone in the market.

Enjoy as I'm sure you will.....

HADave thanks for the tech run down. I might just have to get the cable upgrades. My wife wont get new cables from the 99 cent store so I'm gonna have to think of a lie. Maybe if the VcR wont play tapes or something? I know !!! the DVD sound is "fuzzy" and it's gonna ruin the new TV without the cables. Damn(good damn), that was good. Mella !!!!! don't try and be "Captain kill my buzz", the new set is energy star rated..for whatever thats worth. It's kinda funny, i'm having the house painted and the workers saw us bring the set in and now they have been coming up with bogus ass excuses to come inside. I was actually thinking it was bogus but my wife said it out loud. " these dumb asses just wanna come in and see the new TV" Anywaysss, lovinggggg it !!!<would be skipping around like a 1st grader on too much sugar>.

We've had a 70" Sony HD Digital Rear Projection TV (takes up the entire wall of our living room) for 3 years now and its a great TV...although 6 months ago the color engine mixer started pixilating the screen. We called Sears (where we bought it) and had it replaced...(WE had a 3 year service agreement). Without the agreement it would have cost over 2 grand to replace.

The tech said that the weather here is the cause of many TV failures...but he did indicate that rear projection TV's had the least number of service calls.

We've got the 37" Panasonic Viera plasma. Awesome color, strong picture from every angle. They are known to last longer than LCDs and have a stronger side veiw. Great tv.

I too had to switch recently.

I honestly wasn't impressed with the Visio ... and the Sears salesman who helped us and really knew his stuff said it is definitely not comparable to Sony or Samsung.

I got the Samsung LCD with 1080p and 15000:1 contrast ratio. 46"

I would not buy any more electronics from Costco. Every single thing I've bought there has crapped out right around the time the warranty expired. I truly believe they get sent the seconds on the name brand merchandise, at least on island. Never shopped there on the mainland.

At least Sears stands behind what it sells.

Just my honest opinion, glad everyone is enjoying their Costco scores, maybe I've been unlucky with them.
