Legislative leaders want to hear Punans' concerns
#1
For the first time, the leadership of the State House of Representatives will be in Pahoa to hear the concerns of Puna's public. Speaker Joseph Souki, Vice-Speaker John Mizuno, House Majority Leader Scott Saiki, Majority Floor Leader Representative Cindy Evans and Finance Committee Chair Sylvia Luke will be at the Pahoa Community Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015.

State Dist. 4 Rep. Joy San Buenaventura invites you to tell the House leaders, who set policy, directly what your concerns are for the upcoming 2016 legislative session. Please turn out to testify...Don't let them come here for nothing!

They're not coming here for nothing. They are coming for window dressing. Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”. That's the way I'm beginning to feel about voting in the usual Hawaii Democrats over and over. They may come visit and pretend to listen to you, but they will go back to Honolulu and still treat Puna like a red-headed stepchild. And I'm a registered Democrat!

The longer I live in Hawaii the less I like the Democratic Party.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Whenever I get too down on the political leadership at home here in Hawaii, imagining sitting in Alabama or South Carolina and giving a critique of living under the political majority over there tends to brighten my outlook by several tens of thousands of shades of grey.

PM2: The biggest problem with the Hawaii Democrats is that they pretend to be "progressive" when their biggest objective is to maintain a status quo of privilege for their good old boy crony network of well connected money interests and unions. I've lived in Alabama, and at least they don't pretend to be progressive while doing basically the same thing under a different party banner. I guess I just have an issue with hypocrites.

Semantics: leadership wants to "hear", but this does not mean they will "listen".

The "political majority" runs this place the same way Boss Hogg ran Hazzard County.

I understand your gripe, Chunkster. I don't care for that aspect either. Though as for hypocrites, I would say the GOP holds the crown, hands down.

their (Hawaii Democrats) biggest objective is to maintain a status quo of privilege for their good old boy crony network of well connected money interests and unions.

Take as an example that voting day is a state "holiday." The actual holiday is mostly enjoyed by state and county workers, who then have all day to vote for the people in power who provide them with their jobs and benefits. That's what, about 30% of the vote right there?

Oh, I agree about most Republicans. Their claims to be morally superior Christians are completely bogus. The system is broken here in Hawaii because it is a one party system. Elsewhere, especially on the national level, the two party system is broken, perhaps beyond repair.

Chunkster, agreed some political competition locally would likely be beneficial overall. Of course it depends on the competition, too. Can't imagine an influx of Trump lobotomy cases or xenophobic bible thumping zealots would do much to elevate things.
