"Fare wars" from Oahu don't really help residents of the "neighbor" islands.

Hot damn! I didn't know Virgin was flying to Hawaii.
Neighbor Island residents often have to go via HNL so this does help.

You have to purchase the fare before midnight tonight! It's a great fare from Honolulu and eventually Maui. But for the Big Island you'll have to add another $180.00.

Virgin America starting to make direct flights to Hawaii is going to put competitive pressure on Alaska and Hawaiian. Personally prefer Hawaiian but they are trying to stay with a premium rate plus putting even more seats in coach while opening space in first class. Alaska hasn't really been able to get their costs down either while decreasing the in-air service. United has lost it. Like the article says, this promotional pricing may turn into airfare war next year.

Competition is only truly relevant (to non-Oahu residents) if/when other carriers start running direct flights to/from islands that are not Oahu.

Case in point: the "bargain" $338 airfare costs an extra $180 ... suddenly that "bargain" isn't such a good deal.

Funny thing about the United ITO-LAX direct: they don't have Hawaiian's "on time" record, but a delayed United flight is still hours faster than a layover in HNL...

I recently priced flights from Chicago to Hilo and back, leaving next week and returning the following week. Hawaiian's website lowest rate was $1900 and some change. United was $888 (and that was going through HNL, not the direct to ITO flight which theoretically should be cheaper). Delta was a few dollars more at $910 and American a tad more than that. The friend I was pricing them for had previously tried to book trips through Orbitz (I don't know what carriers or price) and they kept taking her money and then emailing her the next day "there was a problem" and that her reservation was canceled and she would get a refund in 3 days. That went on for 3 days before she gave up and asked what to do.

You could take one of the Mokulele flights from/to Waimea to Maui and fly to/from the mainland from there. It is possible to get to/off this rock without touching Hawaiian airlines if you are willing to drive to the west side.

Flying into Kona from ORD on the 11th and returning on the 18th is $808.00 on Delta right now.
