Dengue
#1
Having experienced dengue fever in the Caribbean I think the non-response from the state and county is insane. The Mayor and the governor need to declare an emergency and use all resources and stomp this thing. Before it costs lives or destroys tourism.

It's only on the Big Island, so dengue fever goes into the "not really a problem" category along with the coqui, fire ants, coffee borer beetle, etc.

(Sometimes the snark is truth, merely historical precedent wrapped in a "bad attitude".)

It's all spelled out in this fine news article:

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/news...prevention

In 2009, the Vector Control branch in Hawaii County lost 11 of 15 positions ... in response to concerns about the cuts, state legislators agreed to fund two additional Vector Control field positions for Hawaii County ... may be recruited sometime later next year

much of the prevention efforts will have to fall on residents...

Like most problems on the Big Island: "no funding, you're on your own".

I caught the tail end of something on the radio yesterday about more cases of Dengue (10 more?) reported on Big Island. I believe they mentioned them occurring in the South Kona area.

I remember a breakout while living on Maui. Centered in the Hana - wet side....first thing the county did was remove all the dead cars - that seemed the be one of the places the skeeters seemed to breed

Same song new verse. We really are on our own. Yesterday (Tuesday)I went to Wallyworld to procure mosquito protection only to find very little on the shelves and the garden section has been converted to the north pole with all the trappings for a typical American style Christmas. I asked a worker there where they moved the mosquito repellent products and the response was, and I quote, "Well, if we have any it would be in the sporting aisle or where household chemicals are". When I asked if management was ordering more, since we have Dengue fever in the area[V] he said, "I think management is more concerned with making room for Christmas decorations". I felt like I was in a bad movie! I asked him to please suggest to his manager to order more mosquito repellent as I know others will want some as well.[V]

Yes: Walmart (and others) prioritize seasonal products over normal stock. After a couple of years, I learned to stock up on basics in the fall...
