The official start of the Pahoa Roundabout detour starts today, and will be the only option 24/7 through May, or likely longer. I wonder if the County might open up Railroad to alleviate some of the bottleneck and daily six month grind of this? Let's be the squeaky wheel on this and put on pressure to open our taxpayer improved Railroad route!

Good idea Kiana. Railroad Ave cost millions to build, why not use it for a few months?. As a temporary additional route while the roundabout is under construction, it wouldn't create the same problems that a full time, full load lava route would have caused such as a substantial traffic increase in HPP and regular grading and upkeep of the cinder surface.
Instead of 100% of the Hwy 130 traffic, as a secondary alternate route Railroad Ave might only carry 20-30% of the load (my best guess based on nothing), but 20-30% fewer vehicles on the Pahoa detour would result in a substantial reduction in traffic backups, especially in the morning and evening.

Paid for with bond debt, so we're still paying for it.
"Please, County, can we use this thing we're paying for? Pretty please?"
Wondering what impact this will have on Pahoa businesses -- maybe HTH will investigate, then publish the results after the roundabout is complete and the news is no longer current.

It's in the tribune today. Estimate is June completion. One thing around here, asphalt can't be laid when it is pouring down rain. That extends completion estimate dates.

If 'they' say June - read December. A whole year round the sun whilst we watch the Icy boys play with the roundabout...

The article says "located at the intersection of Highway 130 and Highway 11" -- um, what?

The US military can put a bridge over a river in 24 hours but it takes 9 months to make an asphalt circle?

So are you then volunteering to step up and pay the residents of HPP for the wear and tear on their privately owned and maintained roads you think should be available to to save you a little aggravation with a teeny tiny little detour?
If the county had taken over Maku'u and the cross streets everyone is going to want to drive on, because getting onto the highway at Maku'u during rush hour is an exercise in futility, you wanting to use HPP roads to avoid the detour might make sense, but they didn't, so what you are asking for is free use of private property to make your drive about 5 minutes shorter.

Same as it ever was.
