HPP Board of Director Candidates
#1
WANTED: Director Candidates for Hawaiian Paradise Park --
Six Districts Open for Director Elections!

There will be six openings on the nine-member Hawaiian Paradise Park Owners Association's Board of Directors. The mail-in election takes place June 1, 2016, and interested owners who would like to run as a candidate in any one of these open seats must submit their candidate's application form by its deadline on Friday, March18,2016 at 4:00pm to the office on Maku'u Drive. Forms are available at the office or on the web at www.hppoa.net. Please submit your completed candidate's form as soon as possible. Call staff at 808-966-4500 with questions.

The six open districts are:
District 1 (3-year term)
District 3 (2-year term)
District 4 (2-year term)
District 6 (3-year term)
District 8 (1-year term)
District 9 (3-year term)

To be an eligible candidate you must be a lot owner in HPP - in good standing (your annual road fee is paid)- and run in the district in which you own a lot. If you own multiple lots, and are in good standing, you are eligible to run in any one of the open districts.

Successful candidates must be willing to uphold the Bylaws (see on www.hppoa.net) and attend monthly board meetings (third Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm).

Here is your opportunity to represent your district and its needs, review and influence the future of the Park along with its budget, personnel and roadway needs. Be the change you want to see.[Smile]

Given the airing of dirty laundry by some HPP residents here recently, I'd be surprised if there's a huge rush of qualified applicants for those positions on the board. Good luck to whoever applies. You'll need it. And a good lawyer.

Is the problem the airing of dirty laundry, or that there is dirty laundry to be aired? No dirty laundry, no public airing.

With 6 out of 9 seats open this could be a chance for real change, but it could also mean an inexperienced board with no clear idea of how things should be done according to state law and the bylaws.

I admire your optimism.

The question is who would do that job for free! And why would someone do that job for free. In the past sure when it was like a small village where people pretty much got along, but now it's no longer that place.
There to much money at stake- directly (multi million dollar budget ) and secondarily (real estate values, etc)
And then if the membership wants to get past the endless cycle for people getting on the board for some alternate agenda. Then it needs to hire some qualified people!

I agree. First you have to own property in HPP as well as "be current" with yearly road fees to qualify to be on the board and go to the meetings every month(which eliminates long distance property owners). Then about half of the property owners who live here work and the other half are retired. Why would either want a thankless job that takes up a lot of their time with no compensation?

HPP needs to bring in professional management.
But will we be willing to pay for it.

We are paying a lot more for not having it

But when setting something like this up " the devil is in the detail" there must financial disclosure and conflict of interest clauses and the like

There are some earnest, well-meaning people in HPP who think that continuing to play the game of elections, committees, and meetings will somehow magically make things work. Sadly, I think some of them may actually enjoy the whole chaotic process of constantly participating in a system that will never go anywhere. I base this opinion on the fact that this group of people are the ones in the best position to bring the whole rotten house down by organizing a lawsuit against the BOD, yet they can't bring themselves to do it. This is despite the fact that a number of individuals (myself included) with the means to do so have offered to contribute toward funding legal fees.

The last time the HPP activists starting suing each other, Judge Nakamura put the hui into receivership, and HPP entered a period of good management by outside, court supervised professionals. So we can go on with the elections, committees, and meetings that have gotten us nowhere, or we can end it and start over with a completely new slate. Or we can go on with the bickering and the probably delusional idea the we will somehow get it right with one more election, one more committee, or one more round of meetings.

What was it Einstein said about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome?

Fine local tradition, that one.
