Travel tip: $199 flights from LAX to Europe
#1
Wow Air to start $99 flights from LAX to Iceland and $199 flights from LAX to Europe

No-frills carrier Wow Air announced Tuesday it would begin offering flights to Iceland from Los Angeles International Airport at prices as low as $99 each way.

The relatively new Icelandic airline also said it would offer $199 flights for travelers who stopover in Iceland and then continue on to London, Paris, Berlin and 18 other European destinations.

I did a quick online check and found $99 seats still available from LAX to Reykjavik in mid-October. Other destinations are available for $199 each way, but seats are selling fast.

Wow offers the same starting prices at San Francisco International Airport. Service is set to begin June 9 from SFO and June 15 from LAX.

Flights from L.A. to Reykjavik will operate four days a week with connecting flights to Europe. Service from San Francisco to Iceland will operate five days a week.

And of course there are fees that will add to your ticket price. These apply to each leg of the journey (these are online prices only; charges are higher, sometimes double, if you pay at check-in):

--Free, small carry-on luggage up to 11 pounds
--$48 for a larger carry-on bag
--$67 for a first checked bag
--$10 to $12 for seat reservations

The airline says it will be using long-range A330-300 aircraft for the longer hauls from the West Coast.

Wow starting offering $99 fares from the East Coast (Boston and Baltimore) to Iceland last March.

You have to pay for carry ons of more than 5kg, and seat premiums, but 370 ow to London is sweet! The Ryan Air for across the Atlantic...empty your bladder before you board!

I'd be a little cautious about this. I picked some dates randomly for a two week trip from LA to London, even using Wow Airlines' suggestions for the cheapest times to travel, and in nearly all cases American Airlines was cheaper, and you didn't have to fly via Reykjavik. It might be a little cheaper if you fly without luggage but who does that on long-haul?

If you're flying one way, it might be an option, but wouldn't be my choice.
