Amazon expands into ocean shipping

The jist of the article seems to be about getting products from manufacturers more cheaply, but without much meat on the bones as far as information shared so far it's not unreasonable to see amazon shifting shipments of their heavier / bulkier items to Alaska and Hawaii via barge instead of continuing to subsidize air shipments the way they have.

I've given up on Amazon and moved over to ebay. Finding better selection, lots of free shipping and ebay is bending over backwards in customer service, they've got a great guarantee policy.

I found something I'd been looking for, for a long time in the middle east. US customs confiscated it in New York. Ebay customer service jumped right in and was willing to do the paperwork to customs which must be filed in the country of origin. I made friends with Muhammad the CEO who wrote asking for my phone number to chit chat and ask if there was much of a market for his product in Hawaii. All in all a fun and fruitful shopping experience.

It's a 12v ceiling fans that run on 11w. German design, made in Pakistan and sold out of United Arab Emirates Republic. Got a few, they are amazing for us off grid folk.

We use Amazon a lot. Sometimes they have sent our stuff by barge, I'm quite sure, as it took ,ike 6 weeks. I'm fine with that, as we are seldom in a big hurry.

That translates officially to 7-10 business days to Hawaii and Alaska. There is no Prime 2 day shipping to Hawaii. It's actually in the fine print.

Amazon has multiple business models. Anybody can sell on Amazon (similar to ebay) and in those cases Amazon is just passing on whatever shipping charges the merchant wants.

I use both ebay and amazon, whichever one is most buyer friendly for the product I want. Amazon nearly refuses to ship just about any automotive part to Hawaii, even if its something small that can fit into an envelope and mailed with a stamp. Sometimes I'll buy something and it will say it cannot be shipped to a PO box, and so I give them my physical address. Then they mail it and my physical address is undeliverable to the PO so it gets returned. I learned to put my PO Box on the second line for when that happens and magically it gets delivered to a PO Box when they say they don't ship to PO boxes. Likewise on ebay I've had stuff sent UPS to my PO Box (sort of). UPS sends a post card to the PO Box with a phone number to call so you can arrange to pick it up or have it delivered.

My neighbor orders a lot through Amazon Prime, including food & household items. He said 90% of the time it arrives by Fedex or UPS in 2 or 3 days. He even places orders for $8 or $10 dollars and they ship it by Fedex.
