Ormat decides not to build more geothermal

Not much to the article, since neither HELCO nor Ormat were willing to comment, but one interesting bit:

Ormat ... could meet the pricing threshold of 12 cents per kilowatt hour.

At that price, industrial uses are almost practical -- too bad it's not actually available.

Ormat probably could meet the pricing threshold but probably there wasn't enough profit to put in a new plant. The new plant was to meet state alternative energy goals but there probably wasn't the actual need for more power coming out of Puna, as has been known for years. There is still enough uncertainty with the lava flow to prevent any big dollar industrial investment that would use so much extra power. If PGV is producing 38MW, all of south Puna uses only about 9MW at peak load. That means 29MW is being sent north to Hilo. That is still enough to start phasing out the Puna oil power plant and HELCO may be running the numbers to show it would be worth it to convert that plant to LNG. The Nextera merger is also putting everything on hold.

This seems to be part of a general withdrawal happening. The hospitals laying off, doctors leaving the island, major development pulling out, at least for the east side. There wasn't a whole lot of any rational sense to what the PCDP was hallucinating in 2010, especially in light of 2016. A lot of people in south Puna want to return to 1100 AD, so maybe they get their wish.

PT - you complain a lot about mainlanders wanting to change everything to their modern standards, but then also complain about luddites wishing to live a simple, even "traditional", lifestyle. What's the "right" level of development you want?

Sorry if OT, but Ormat backing out of a new plant isn't really politics either.

There's no forum for "our stupid local economic issues".

A forum for "our stupid local _____ issues" sounds like the exact definition of Punaweb Wink

I'm always curious if PT is interested in actual discussion or not. When reading his posts, I tend to imagine him shaking his curmudgeonly fist and shouting "damn malahinis - stay off the aina!"

Hi Ted! I don't agree with much of what you say, but enjoy hearing your points of view. Case in point; I don't relish the thought of Puna becoming more industrialized, but don't think of myself as a ludite. They didn't have Tesla batteries, flex fuel generators, solar panels, or other types of personal power systems in 1100AD. It's the central grid that has become outdated and unnecessary in an area like Puna(for the very reasons you mention). Puna doesn't need Geothermal.

Home power, Satellite communications, Hydroponic agriculture and uncrowded surf spots are the future here.

I also think it's silly for the few angry old white men remaining here to automatically ignore and poo poo a post just because of who writes it. But hey, that is what we have become.

The only neo-luddites I have run across here are scraggly old white people.

Since some twits want to keep everything on their dirty below the belt personal level, my name is Edward, Ted and Teddy is a nickname. I go by Ed and Eddie also. You will notice my name in a lot of places.

Uni-ted
Exci-ted
Libera-ted
Formula-ted
Interroga-ted
Facilita-ted

It is dumb funny to see so many n00bs fixa-ted on a nickname. These same lamers were outraged when some people a few years ago were logging in under multiple usernames, then proceeding to do so themselves. Hypocrisy has never been in short supply here. Don't worry, stylometry analysis is underway, and yes, I am going to know where you live.

Thanks for the "chat" and proving my point.
