They are a beautiful tree. But, quite dangerous, I understand. Wasn't it the water department property in Hilo that had some large one, and removed them about a year ago? My wife wanted to plant some, and I talked her out of it. I suppose, if someone kept up with trimming it down often, maybe it would be okay.

Don't forget, if it's a big enough branch it might trigger an earthquake. Not to worry though. Just listen to the coquis and if they go quiet, you've got 10 seconds until it hits. (or is it 20 seconds?) "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." -Annie Dillard

In the late 60's C Brewer planted them at the Waiakea office plaza (now the water dept HQ) Hilo Shopping center also planted them in their parking lot because they are beautiful trees.
The falling limbs smashed windshields and dented cars on a regular basis, and the place was always a mess with leaves and sticks. Then in 1984 a windstorm came off Mauna Kea and uprooted them. Luckily it hit at night, cars were literally crushed by limbs a foot thick falling from 80 ft. The building roof was smashed and steel girders bent in the shape of those pretty trees. Tigers are pretty also, but not a good idea to let them loose in your yard.

Sigfried and Roy would probably agree. But on the list of likely ways I'm gonna shake off this mortal coil I think hit by eucalyptus branch sounds kinda cool. And number 849 on the list.

Just be sure it it placed away from things it might harm, if you have the space for it. If not, there are many beautiful, less dangerous trees. Calling around the nurseries is a great idea. I can't remember the name of the one I talked to that had one, but it was miles away from Mt View, so I never made it down there. I have heard they sprout easily, so you might check around some mature trees. I never managed to find a small one, but enjoyed the hunt. I have not yet seen one at the BIAN sale, but they have lots of great plants. Put that on your calendar, no matter what you think you need, you'll find something you want.

The fruit tree vendors that are usually at the very end corner of Maku'u Market (sorry I don't know their names) usually have rainbow eucalyptus. Look for the folks that have LOTS of fruit trees... I know I saw some rainbows there last week.
