Mechanic for front end repairs
#1
My 1989 Mitsubishi Gallant finally stripped one of the CV joints and she needs some love to get her rolling again. Both CV axles and tie rods for sure. Paul's is 90/hr but anyone know of a mechanic who has a better rate or would give me a set price to do axles and tie rods? I'm trying to decide whether to fix it or if it's time to junk it.

Pro Mechanix across Hilo Shopping Center rebuilt my entire front end back in 2014 and I could not be happier. Call Lia at 961-1212.

I've always been happy with Curlees in HPP.

Wallys in HPP did a lot of good work for us.

I will second Curlees. The Toyota dealership changed a belt for us and then suggested another $5,000 in repairs!! This is on a 2001 Highlander and Curlees did the work they said actually needed to be done for about $900.

Curlees has always brought me the removed/replaced part and showed me what was wrong with it and explained why it had to be replaced. One time I went there and my repair took less time than their 1 hour minimum charge. They still charged me the minimum charge but they spent the remaining part of the hour pounding out a dent and fixed my hood- you get what you pay for. A rare thing nowadays.

Don't take it to Paul's in Pahoa. Dunno what's up with them, I had them do front and back wheel bearing and new brake job. Managed to muck up the brake job (forgot to put back in one of the two bolts to that hold the caliper)... Now the brakes are super hot and seem like something else is wrong. A frigen brake job! How can you mess up that? Probably have someone else take a look at it. Dunno, it's a shame. Hard to get a good job done on the big island. If I had a garage and concrete floor, I'd be better off just doing the work myself. Tired of crap jobs and finding the time to bring it back in.

However if you want a really fast safety (they don't even spend the time to look)... It's the way to go. Just don't get anything done by the shop.

I was a Mitsubishi factory mechanic for 10 years. retired now but still do some work for friends etc. I am very familiar with the gallant. I could do the work for you or at least give you an estimate. I charge 35 an hour and do the work at my home in HPP. I think curlees is around 75 an hour or so now. I also work on other makes but prefer Japanese cars as I have worked for Toyota and Isuzu and Suzuki. I maintained a fleet of chevy suburbans for 15 years but trying to forget that J‌avascript:insertsmilie('[Smile]')Paul 808 966 4185
