Greggor Ilagan sings Billy Kenoi's praises
#1
Buried near the end of today's HTH article on the County Council's gushing over Billy Kenoi and his final budget, we find Ilagan's comment:

“It’s amazing, your personal accomplishments, your government accomplishments. … You have took it above and beyond,” said Puna Councilman Greggor Ilagan. “I just really want to tell you, how much I admire and respect you.”

There is no mention of judgment or ethics whatsoever. It might be time for Ilagan to go back to junior college and take a course in critical thinking and/or ethics. Does he think this is going to help him get elected to the State Senate? Whatever doubts I had about voting for Ruderman are now gone.

Here's a link to the whole article:

Respectfully, Chunkster, perhaps the verve in Ilagan's glowing accolades comes from presentation of the budget, the substantial hotel room tax $$$ issue, and Kenoi's overall presentations on other issues (Good Lord, watching the Council meetings is an oxygen sucker, no question![xx(])

Here is the basis for my comments in the links below:

(*Snipped - More at link)

http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2016/0...-tat-grab/

Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi was critical on Wednesday of the State of Hawaii’s distribution of the Transient Accommodations Tax to the four counties, which is likely to be millions less than what Kenoi says the counties should be getting.

“Frankly,” Kenoi told the Hawaii County Council during a budget review meeting in Hilo, “the counties should all stand up and say enough is enough.”

“We are supposed to be receiving $34 million dollars through the TAT,” Kenoi said. “Everyone one of us should be upset about that.”

Then, there is this: (*Snipped - More at link incl. full proposed budget)

http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2015/0...2015-2016/

The proposed budget is $17,752,059 or 4.3 percent larger than last year's spending plan, with no increase in property taxes.

Conclusion

This proposed budget represents our departments’ best efforts to meet the needs of our growing community in a timely and fiscally responsible fashion. Our administration is committed to investing in our future, maintaining core services and meeting our obligations to our employees.

Our economy is in a state of gradual recovery. We believe our investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and parks and recreation are critical to the future of Hawai’i Island. We look forward to working closely with the County Council to put forth a balanced budget that ensures public safety and meets the needs of our community.

NO raise in property taxes is bloody good news! There is also a "campaign" on social media expressing great admiration for Kenoi and his leadership skills, especially during the tough economy of late. The public parks and public services have been maintained, and improved. Many of these things are not just Kenoi, but years (perhaps decades) of planning and funding.

It is election season, and politics enters all issues (the geothermal thread I'm avoiding like the plague...sorry, O/T), however, my personal interaction with both Ilagan and Ruderman leave room for discussion in my mind.

I met Ilagan at a geothermal meeting in Pahoa when Fred Blas was still Councilman. He was with his father, who was a lovely man. Ilagan was SO young, yet I was impressed. His composure wasn't BS, and his father was very well spoken and sincere, as well. I've met with him several times since, and he maintains my respect. He has grown into his position.

When I had the pleasure of meeting Senator Ruderman, it was in another community meeting prior to being elected. Very pleasant, and charming, and also sincere. Unfortunately, he doesn't meet my expectations to continue serving our Puna...yet. I do wish them both well. Things could be a lot worse! (Reserve my right to change my mind through this process, as I am a woman with menopause![}Smile])

Another thing Papa always said: No man is an island, as the old adage says (John Donne circa 1624). Wonder who the bell tolls for? I think all of us, no matter who is elected.

As always, I appreciate your point of view, Opihikao. But for me it all boils down to the element of respect. Respect has to be earned across the board, and not just in some specific, convenient context. Whatever his budgetary accomplishments, I cannot respect someone like Kenoi who broke the public trust by spending money that wasn't his to spend. Call me simplistic, but that's how I am. Ilagan could have made his comments less gushing or limited them to the budget, but they come across as fawning and quite broad.

Back at you, Chunkster. Mahalo for your reasoned opinion/thoughts.

I agree with your assessment of Kenoi. However, would not want to penalize Ilagan for Kenoi's actions.

I believe other Council members also held the same basic opinion as Ilagan with regard to the budget, perhaps with less youthful "gushing" and "fawning". The pressure of being "politically correct" must be immense. Sometimes the delivery comes across poorly, especially for the unseasoned "politician".

Politics sucks sometimes (if not always). The days are gone where "Statesmen" were the norm. I still hold faith Ilagan and/or Ruderman will continue to do their best.

It could be a hell of alot worse.

JMO.

P.S. Waiting for the Mayor's race to start providing/provoking discussion. (Rolling my eyes at this point, sorry. O/T)

Well, at least Greggor hasn't gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar. But, would someone please remind me, what exactly are his accomplishments? I'm not crazy about Ruderman either, but he does have some tangible accomplishments.

what exactly are his accomplishments?

He promised $5M (in bond debt) to build a park in HPP (that the residents aren't sure they want, especially since the rest of Puna will have to traverse "their" private roads to visit said park).

Ilagan's comments are startlingly inappropriate. Not sure about his returning to school for basic ethic and critical thinking classes since folks are still racially block voting for favors instead of what's good for Puna. Which fits right in with Mayor Billy's mafia connections and spending habits. Might as well throw a few rooster fights into that mix. This is not considered civilized behavior by any means.

I think we'd be better off if we could separate how a man behaves in his personal life from how he does his job. If we could bring understanding and a desire to find what is pono in all things rather than our sharpened tongues to each and every nuance of a public persons behavior. In fact I suspect there isn't a person here that could stand up to the scrutiny all these armchair critics are willing to fling at others. As to what is or isn't civilized I imagine the definition itself has as many variations as there are people alive.

That is all well and good - as long as the public person isn't mingling public funds with his supposedly personal life.

Choice A) I've had a couple of conversations with Mr. Ilagan, nothing productive came of it. All I took away from the encounters was this sense of his mannered, country parson comportment. What a stark contrast to his Jerry Lewis highway shtick. But none of that really matters does it? He doesn't strike me as being equipped to swim in the deep end of the pool, but that doesn't stand in the way of his ambition.

Choice B) Mr. Ruderman, on the other hand, I do admire for his ability to run a successful business, be a family man, and somehow find the time to both play lead guitar and be a senator. I buy a few things at his store from time to time; never actually heard him play; and am underwhelmed by his performance as a politician. Oh, and he seems to have some questionable friends and ideological quirks.

Choice C)...uh...?
