Although there are several candidates, it appears that the three front-runners are: Hoffman; Lau; and Kim. Former Mayor Kim is, for the most part, a known. Can anyone tell me more about the other two?

Hoffman is former military and former councilman. I find him quite intelligent and forward thinking. I've been talking to him about island problems and he always has time to listen. I consider him honest too. I suspect that because of his honesty he will be under attack this fall from the Hilo cartel.

The Hilo Cartel. Wow, that's got to be a new HBO mini series! Can't wait to see the next gripping -- or is that griping -- episode of Paradise Park.
Anyway, yea, the other day someone at Malama was talking up Mr. Hoffman. I remember you'd mentioned him a couple of months ago. I looked him up on the internet, but all I found was dated material. Does he ever venture down to Lower Puna? Let us know if there's going to be a meet and greet. Hope springs eternal.

A theme seems to be developing in this Mayoral race that 75 is the new 60, and that heart attacks shouldn't matter (much). But sometimes old does matter
Both Pete and Harry will be 80 before their first term would finish, and both have needed extreme intervention to save their lives in the past, Harry multiple times. They came out of these events seemingly whole and spry but anyone who knows anyone whose been through this knows it has an effect. And it matters, 'cause sometimes old is just too old. I get that they see an opportunity to get back on the stage, but the mayoral job is heavy lifting and these guys are showing up in a back brace.
As I remember Pete was supportive of splitting the island into East and West, Impact fees , and Concurrency. When taken as a whole his could be construed a "beggar your neighbor" approach to dealing with planning and infrastructure. As with many retirees it's a " I got mine" and the next one in can pay for everything I think needs to be fixed or changed. His support for a reevaluation of our property tax classifications was reasonable, but certainly not original.
BTW:
Other than the "Hilo Cartel" are there any other cabals we should be concerned with this political season? The Unions? Opus Dei? The Illuminati?

Mahalo, HiloPuna for your post. Spot on. Appreciate your astute opinion during the election seasons. As to the question you ask (below):
"BTW:
Other than the "Hilo Cartel" are there any other cabals we should be concerned with this political season? The Unions? Opus Dei? The Illuminati?"
In short, yes. Time to figure out which is the "lesser of two (or three) evils".

Assuming we're lucky enough to have that many choices, yes.

Other than the "Hilo Cartel" are there any other cabals we should be concerned with ... The Illuminati?
Glad you asked HiloPuna. There may be a MyIlluminti chapter opening near you (and me) soon:
When people think of the Illuminati, they tend to think big-picture...
We are everywhere. Our logo is on every dollar. Our spy planes leave chemtrails over both land and sea.
Other organizations must wonder, “How do the Illuminati find time to control all the sheeple?” Well, here’s the secret: day to day, we work at a granular scale. There is so much we do, and so much more we could do—and that’s where you come in. We have enough eyes in the sky; we need boots on the ground.
So it is with great pleasure that we introduce MyIlluminati: a vast, lively splinter network that allows you—yes, even you!—to get involved with the Illuminati, at the local level.
