Zendo Kern
#1
Come the season of the waving and I reminisce: wither Zendo Kern after all the campaigning, distracting morning drivers and posing for smiley signs? He fell fast after winning, but I still wonder: why?

Reading Ilagan's "81% of funding is off- island" (FB post) brought the question back, why would someone go to the trouble of running if they had no desire to govern?

The last time I spoke to Mr Kern was a few years ago, he was telling me he liked his position within the county council and wanted a career in politics. I don't even see him surfing Poihiki anymore, almost like he moved off Island. I thought he was working with Mr Graeme Ellis on a new housing code or permitting process or something. Both Mr Ellis and Mr Kern have somewhat disappeared now, jmo.

My heart hopes Mr, Kern and his family are healthy and happy somewhere, My gut tells me that someone may have bought out Mr Kern or asked him to step aside. What was Mr Kern's feelings or thoughts about G.M.O here on the big island? Could he have Offered Mansanto or Ha money to simply walk away from his positions?

They were in cahoots? Kern faded quick after introducing a bill for a baseyard in a residential zoning, which had all the appearances of being greased. It was sliding through until an elderly woman neighbor started exposing what was happening. Zendo quietly yanked the bill, then didn't like how some people were following his wife around, and it seems it was mentioned he went to do construction on the mainland. Seems like he yanked a couple other construction favor bills just before he left. He does seem to still be involved with the Shipman shopping center planning.

Zendo was involved as a partner in the project known as Ulupono Centre, the one at Milo St on the Bypass Road. His partners, the Foster Family, own the project in its entirety, Zendo is no longer affiliated.
His retirement from public office at such an early stage left many observers and friends in shock. It was solely about personal issues is how he explained it to me.
Apparently his relationship with his wife was more important to him than anything else.

Gypsy's speculations about Monsanto and Ha are risible, if not slanderous. But to prove slander the source must act with malice, which requires forethought. I think that leaves Gyp in the clear.

As I recall Zendo was very upset about TIffany Hunt making unwarranted public statements about his wife.
Assume the best and ask questions.

The plot thickens: Check out this post- http://www.punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22635

Showing that Danny Paleka, who won District 5 (after Zendo Kern chose not to run for re-electio) recieved a $2,000 contribution from Friends of Zendo Kern in 2014 that was never reported to the Campaign Spending Commission until less than 2 months ago.

Those charges against Paleka are serious. Considering this dropped today, he was probably getting early notification in July. Kind of explains why he was agitated. What has he been doing for two years? Maybe it is just mismanagement of campaign funds, doesn't look good though.

Looks like Ruggles has somebody being her own camera person, the ones on her Youtube channel.

They have been meeting a lot. The Occupy view seems more objective for some reason.

Paleka better be doing some good song and dance practice, get his microphone skills upped several notches, and prepare to explain what the hell he is doing.

It sure looks like Dannys campaign is a family affair. As a first time candidate last election it seems they had some issues they didn't deal with correctly. That doesn't mean corruption.
A donation to other candidates campaigns is one of the few things a retiring elected official can do with remaining funds. After what occurred prior to his retirement I couldn't imagine Zen donating to Tiff...

@Hilokine The Zendo kern contribution was just one of many large contributions that Danny Paleka did not report until June of this year. A County Council candidate for District 4 blew the whistle on him in May, after which time Danny Ammended 28 reports from the 2012-2014 election. Other contributions not listed until June this year include: $1,000. contribution from Russell Kuwaye, owner of Puna Rock co. and Hilo Hawaiian Orchids, LLC.

Some off island contributions not originally reported include $1,000 from the operating engineers union in Alameda, CA. ; $1,000 from IBEW (Political Action Committee) PAC unit 401 fund out of Honolulu; $2,000 from the Hawaii Laborers Political Action Committee out of Honolulu; $1,000 from HGEA on Honolulu, $2,000 from the Hawaii Laborers Political Action Committee in Honolulu.

More than 9k in contributions, and more than 24k in expenditures not reported until this year. That is a lot of money to accidentally forget to report.
