The Honolulu daily has an article today on the DOT's plan to possibly restripe Highway 130 into four narrow lanes in lieu of completing the full widening project. The article is paid content, so I will not cut and paste much. Here is the link:

I will, however, post two salient snips from the article. First:
"In the meantime, Sniffen said, the department will “re-look at re-striping that whole route to add in a fourth lane so we can have continuously two lanes in each direction full time. So that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
The idea is to create four 11-foot lanes with two 5-foot shoulders in each direction to increase the capacity, Sniffen said.
Sniffen offered few details about that proposal, and a spokesman for the department said there is no target date yet for when those improvements would be completed or how much the reconfiguration of the highway might cost."
OK, is it just me, or does this sound intentionally vague and like an effort to stave off criticism?
And secondly:
“Ige has said he will propose tax increases again next year to provide more funding for new highway construction. He has rejected any suggestion that his administration is deferring popular highway capacity projects as a way of pressuring lawmakers into approving the tax increases.”
All I can say to that second part is, "Yeah, right, and you probably have some ocean front property near Albuquerque you want to sell me."

I'd go for 4 lanes, a 45 MPH speed limit to account for narrower lanes, and NO stop light at Shower Dr. which will just create an unnecessary bottleneck at that intersection in the afternoon. Stop lights are expensive, so that oughta save a few bucks.

Most of it is already 45mph. The slower the speed though, the less traffic that the road can handle, measured on a vehicles per hour basis. Slower speeds also cause traffic to bunch up more, preventing people from being able to easily enter/exit the highway. This can result in more accidents because people will take chances just to be able to enter/exit the highway.

This "idea" totally neglects pedestrian, bicycle and moped traffic. There is a stretch, you know the house with the big lava dome in the front yard, that narrows down to two lanes with very little shoulder on each side. LOL thinking what that will look like repainted to 4 lanes, and a shoulder on each side for foot and bicycle traffic. There is also that stretch from Orchid Land to Shower where the speed limit is 45 but you need to do at least 50 to keep traffic moving smooth, without jump merges from HPP trying to pull out in a gap. Most people are tailgating if somebody isn't doing 55 in that stretch.
HPP is the source of all the problems. Nuke that and the traffic burden and costs go away.

All true, but I think one of the criteria for setting speed limits is the width of the road. If the lanes are narrower that will probably be part of changes that are made. I mentioned it more as a potential part of the highway modification, not as a personal preference.

You can have 10 lanes each direction. At some point it all "merges" down. Solve THAT.

With good reason Ted, none of those modes of transport belong on a highway.

Do you think people will stop using the road in these ways after striping? Maybe the state will build a separate pathway for them.
