Water break exposes language barriers
#1

http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/loc...goes-south

quote:
Customers calling the county’s emergency water line Sunday after a water main break caused an interruption in service to much of upper Hilo were met with another surprise — call center operators in South Carolina who, to some, might as well have been speaking another language.

...

“I asked them, ‘Where are you?’ She said, ‘We’re in Hilo,’” Lewitzki said Monday. “I said, ‘Excuse me, what street are you on?’ And they tried to pronounce the street (Kekuanaoa Street). I said, ‘You guys aren’t in Hilo. I just drove past the water place. The place is dark.’ She said, ‘We’re in South Carolina.’

"We're in South Carolina."

This. Isn't it awesome to live in a place where you can pay exhorbitant prices and high taxes to create desparately-needed mainland jobs?

That.... I'd be more than willing..and I'm sure there are plenty of others in Puna/Hilo that could use the extra few bucks to answer calls of this nature.
.. Im a little disgusted they would outsource labor for that purpose.

I am not in any way defending the outsourcing of Hawaii jobs to the mainland, but the company is an after hours call center that fills in the gaps when Helco is closed, they probably are contracting to do so for many different companies all over the country. I doubt there is even one contractor on any of the islands who does this sort of work.

Since the time zones work in Hawaii's favor it could be a good business here, midnight East Coast time is only 6 PM here. A lot of polling companies are on the west coast for that reason. But, consistent power, phones, and internet service would be critical to success.

A call center in East Hawaii was tried a few years ago:

"And they tried to pronounce the street (Kekuanaoa Street)."

I have to admit, although I've been here a long time now, I would have struggled to pronounce that name correctly first time round!
