Home:

1) The food is fresh, fresh, fresh
2) It's prepared with a minimum amount of oil (olive), salt, sweeteners, and no additives
3) Reasonable priced
4) No fossil fuels are internally combusted to travel to my kitchen (some propane is ignited on my stove however)
5) I save a fortune every year on tips!

Sorry, not open to the general public at this time.

We liked Hilo Bay Cafe, but it is pricey. Pineapples was a big miss for us (surprised because of all the good reviews). Just bland. We had good food at Cafe Pesto and would go back there. Kaleo's in Puna was also good and we would/will go back again. Although outside your area criteria, Waipao Cookhouse was our absolute favorite.

Never got to HOTPE Kitchen, but apparently it's supposed to be good. May be too exclusive to get reservations... :-)

Took the Grandkids to Kuhio Grill last night and was very disappointed. The service was ok but I take issue with a restaurant that serves Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and Mashed Potatoes from a box.

Sombats Thai in Hilo, Ken's House of Pancakes has killer fried chicken, the little joint behind Suisan will cook your just bought fresh fish for you, Cafe Pesto has a great Ceasar salad, I like the hot bar at the Hilo Island Naturals, but am not a fan of the Pahoa one (different cooks).

Over the 4 years we've tried most places, some many times. Hilo Bay Cafe is high quality, pricey but worth it. In Pahoa there are surprisingly high quality options. Kaleo's does a fine job with contemporary Pacific Rim cuisine. Ning's is the real deal Thai restaurant. Run by a friendly family with meals that are richly flavored. Their medium is pretty hot by American standards so order accordingly. Paolo's is Italian dining and be prepared to get on board whatever chef Paolo is making. Great atmosphere and food prepared by a true master. Finally, old dependable, First Choice Chinese Bar-B-Que. Steady stream of dine-in and take-out customers attest to the variety, quality and quantity. Mochiko chicken is ono. Ning's has proven to be our overall favorite.
