#1
SB 272 has been scheduled for a hearing by the House Finance Committee this Thursday (3/30) at 3pm. That means, your testimony in support for full funding of SB 272 needs to be submitted by 3pm tomorrow (3/29). Just one more step to the floor vote!!
We only have one day to pull it off - please share this post, tag your friends, and try to submit your testimony today or tomorrow morning. You can do so on Hawaii State Legislature's website (https://goo.gl/Byur2w) or email representative Sylvia Luke at repluke@capitol.hawaii.gov

Here's an overview video of the current goals behind SB 272 funding and the status quo.

try educating people on Lepto for a change as its more accidental and KILLS via stagnant water,,,, it actually KILLS people in Hawaii... ie 35 in last hundred yrs.. about one every 3 years on average, and thats just the known cases... RatLung hasnt killed anyone on the Big Island yet.. the worst case is that German Lady about ten yrs ago thats still in a coma...
so many in Puna are paranoid of RatLung, yet are clueless on the actual Killer here in Hawaii.. Leptospirosis !!!!

RatLung, just wash your veggies, or cook them, then raise you planter beds/boxes, wrap copper around legs, adopt a cat or two, and buy Corry's slug bait... ITS ALL ON YOU, and ONLY You! whats the county going to do, come and kill slugs for you lol?? pfft??? explain that to me.... if youre careless and dont take these precautions, you have a risk.....

they are both similar, one just Kills far MORE people! Leptospirosis !!!

Watch the video bananahead. The infection rate is quickly rising and it's likely on at least 3 other islands now. Vectors for how people get it and how to properly treat for it are unknown.

how many died on the Big Island again?? 90% rats have it, 2/3rd of semi-slugs have it.. how many died again?

semi-slugs are VERY COMMON here! I kill them all the time, I can go find a dozen tonight too. Ive prob been exposed as I pick them up and throw them to the ground at 100MPH when I find them on my plants.. I also use CORRY's around my home, but I have acres of property so cant get them all .. just like LFA's

your video: "16 cases in 2016 the ENTIRE STATE of Hawaii".. over a million people there + tourists...
how many died again?

like I said above, its all on YOU, YOU have to take proactive measures YOURSELF. kill YOUR own GD Slugs/Rats, wash YOUR Own veggies, or cook them... etc. etc.

but be worried more about Lepto, its far rarer, and Kills a zillion/infinity more people here in our paradise!...

This clip is a couple years old now but does give some insight to the Rat Lungworm problem in Puna.

http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/28805...aii-island

Many people in Puna live with catchment tanks as a source of water. The infected slugs or rats can climb in under your catchment cover and die. The rat lungworm eels or parasites will live on for some time at the bottom of the water catchment. Most who do catch the parasite never get tested for it properly because they don't get the spinal tap. Your body will start fighting the parasite two-three weeks after having symtoms, so a blood test will come back negative unless you get the blood test weeks after the onset of the disease.

This video is always worth watching again.

Rat lungworm info here.

Some folks may have the parasite in their water source (catchment tank) so washing your produce may actually spread the lungworm eggs or parasite onto your produce. Some may even brush their teeth with their catchment water. The slug may die in your tank or on your tank cover but the parasites will live on in the water, pretty scary stuff. jmo

Get hooked up to county water.

It amazes me that people on catchment also go to the county water spigots to get their drinking water !

For the same price as your catchment/free water , you could hook up to the county water system !!

cool we have other people posting NOW!

fwiw, the video is hard to watch.. these 2 should NOT be on Camera, they either took bong rips before they started, or they did a quick 1 take and were out of here 6 minutes vid session .....
they both failed BIGTIME because one of the main carriers of RatLungWorm is the slug eating flatworm called Platydemus manokwari ..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platydemus_manokwari
...Platydemus manokwari eat earthworms, slugs, and snails.. they are common in wet areas of Puna, I can find a couple every night when its misty rain.. we also have another flatworm, the larger yellowish hammerhead one called Bipalium kewense
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipalium_kewense
it eats same food... earthworms, slugs, snails, and is even more common than the Platydemus manokwari

the KEY IS!
90% of the Rats in Hilo have RatLungWorm.. so how much higher can it go???... 10% ??? NO, because now many will be setting rat traps, even those vegans that dont kill flies will be trying for kill rats and slugs now.... and the rat pop in residential areas will decline in future... thus the infected numbers will peak, then go down as the Rat pop goes down...

im all pau w/this now.. wash your veggies! aloha

bananahead - SB 272 is not a vote between ratlung and lepto funding. Ratlung deserves the funding. Afterward, why not contact your reps to ask for similar funding to fight lepto with the arguments you have put forward?

Obie - I'd be glad to hook up to county water, but the closest line is 3.1 miles away. In the meantime, I do fill up 5 gallon water jugs at the county spigots so I don't inadvertently drink parasites, cysts, bacteria, etc. Nothing amazing about that, since I'm not offered another choice at this time.

You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.
