Amazon won't ship, Walmart won't do ship to store and wants $80 to ship a small one. Anyone carry them locally? They seem to be the most efficient.
Anyone in town selling Igloo chest freezers?

Igloo freezers are made by RCA. Just my experience, but RCA stands for "Really Crappy Appliances". The only appliances we have had luck with are GE. We got our GE chest freezer at HD. That's not an endorsement of HD, but don't shop at Lowes.

Is costco considered "local"?
Walmart or Target (they do free shipping as well) <-check online... You could give S. Tokunaga fishing store a call see what they have. Otherwise you're pretty much **** out of luck for hilo side. How big of a cooler are you looking for... Maybe they are out of stock... You could try longs as well. You could also try used... https://honolulu.craigslist.org/search/b...ery=cooler&sort=rel Just a side note, Rubbermaid, Coleman, Igloo... any of these cheap coolers are pretty much all the same. Unless you spend 300 or more on a double insulated cooler you're going to get same performance.

Did u find one? We have a big one on wheels, but the extended handle is broken. I can check if my husband wants to all (we never use it)

Thanks guys. In particular I was looking for an Igloo chest freezer, but no one seems to carry them locally and they seem very prone to shipping damage. I will likely just buy something from walmart or HD and deal with the extra 50kWh per year with an extra solar panel. Mahalo!

I would love to read the stats on the freezer. Do you know where to see them?

Igloo 5.1cuft 172kWh/yr (tag is shown in images)
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Igloo-5.1-cu-...r/21311884 Magic Chef 5.2cuft 221kWh/yr (tag linked under description) http://m.homedepot.com/p/Magic-Chef-5-2-.../206174597 471Wh/day vs 605Wh/day. So about 134 watt-hours per day extra on the Magic Chef. Not huge, just annoying!

The moral of the story is: you have to design around what you can go get at the store.

The energy guide on the Magic Chef specifies "Only compare to other labels with yellow numbers - Labels with yellow numbers are based on the same test procedures". The Igloo has black numbers and doesn't have that language.
"Are all EnergyGuide labels the same? No, there are some different labels. Appliances that are rated with updated energy efficiency tests have EnergyGuide labels with bright yellow numbers like this example. Other appliances have original labels with black numbers. Before you compare the features of different models, check the labels. Make sure the models you are comparing have EnergyGuide labels with all yellow numbers or all black numbers. Also, labels are appliance-specific. For example, furnace labels don't show energy costs; dishwasher labels show two costs — one for people who use electric waters heaters, and another for people who use natural gas water heaters. Still, all EnergyGuide labels give you a way to compare the energy use of similar appliances." https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/00...uide-label The Igloo is rated colder (up to -18) compared to -4 for the magic chef. ETA: the ftc stuff

Interesting info, terracore.
The 7.x cf Fridigaire I just bought at my mainland house, says $30 a year and 254kwh and has the yellow number. I just called my son to check. Obviously, that $30 is based on $0.10 a kwh, not $0.40. However, in that house, I pay only $0.056 per kwh up to 800kwh a month per the contract I got. Over that, I have to pay the outrageous price of $0.075 per kwh. Yes - 5.6 cents... |
