Lasik on island? Insight on Costco vision center?
#1
Two questions in one thread:

1) Looks like there is no lasik machine on the island. True or false?

2) For eyeglasses and contact lenses, has anybody been to the vision center at Costco? Would be interested in hearing experiences.

Thread hijacks encouraged, but please limit to the following: eyes, vision, eye doctors, eye glasses/contacts, lasers, and clever colloquialisms, puns, double entendres, idioms, and/or amusing anecdotes about the thread subject matter.

We order from zenni.com. Have been using them for about five years with good results. We both have progressive type lenses.

This place in Hilo seems to offer LASIK:

I also seem to remember TomK having secret military lasers at the observatory, so perhaps if you stand at the Star Visitor Sanctuary he can target your eyeballs...

Can't speak to the Costco in Kona, but the vision center in Hono and the mainland have been great, if you can wait a week to ten days.

Hawaii Vision Specialists is relatively new in Hilo. They are basically across from Ponds restaurant in old lighting store location,. My husband and a friend both had cataract surgery there w Dr. Driscol and were very happy. Another friend just got lid surgery there but I havent talked to her yet so dont know how it went. For regular eye care, we go to Dr. Camblor in Hilo ... Miilani St. Behind Freddys restaurant. Very nice staff and Dr. Camblor is great.

I saw Dr Maeda in Hilo and he referred to Jensen Eye care in Honolulu. One overnight there and BAM! I'm seeing like a pro. Very nice people, I couldn't be more satisfied.

Last year I asked my eye doctor in Hilo who they would recommend for lasik, etc. in Hawaii. He shook his head and said, "No one." He then went on to say I would be better off going to the mainland for a couple weeks to have it done.

Dr. Driscoll has been getting the word out that he is here. A year ago, your doctor may not have known about him yet. He is a great eye surgeon and his office does Lasik. He operates out of Hilo surgical center but I suspect lasik is done in the office. The site has a lot more information. There's a link above.

I called Hawaii Vision Specialists. They don't have a lasik machine and refer to Oahu. Also they said it's about $5k for both eyes. When I price shopped Oahu a few years ago the going rate was closer to $3k for two eyes. So I don't know what's up with that.
