should the neighbor islands pay for rail?

State needs to find an additional $1.4B for rail (now estimated at $10B), so they're considering raising State taxes (GET, TAT) to pay for it, even though there is limited (read: no) benefit for outer island residents.

"We're not looking to increase any county taxes," Onishi said. "These are not county taxes. They're state taxes."

I think we all saw this coming. More bonanza for crooked contractors and their politician patrons.

What a joke. Poor Oahu needs all of the Big Island's money.

It almost sounds as if the implementation of the project has been mismanaged. Since OHA is already suing for the mismanagement of Mauna Kea, why not include HART in their filing? I'm sure their board members think they can do better. If not personally, then definitely some of their close relatives.

Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty?

The only thing "mismanaged" about the project is its stated purpose -- HART is not, and has never been, a "transportation" project.

As soon as they decided that rail wasn't going to the Airport or UH it was obvious it was 100% Scam. But Oahu controls the state, The only way to oppose them is at a national level-

Why not raise the gas tax on Oahu?
They have the cheapest gas in the state.
Makes sense to charge the motorists who will be using it in the future...

Good suggestion.
Even if the motorists don't use HART, they will (allegedly) benefit in seeing a reduction of drivers on Oahu roads, reducing congestion, travel time, etc. It would be like the private toll roads on the mainland, you pay for an easier, faster commute.

Latest studies show Oahu highway traffic going up after rail is finished.

The way I see it: neighbor islands will be paying for rail anyway -- we already are -- so we might as well try for some concessions out of the deal. Example: every island keeps its own TAT...

At a minimum.
I hate the political elite headquartered in Oahu.
State, OHA, DHHL, DPH, all of them.
