Thanks for the post Eric!!!
I have split loyalties on this one. My first preference will always be Polynesia , no matter what. So either team will be a win for me. And of course, the Big Island is home but the Tahitians are AWESOME with their dedication to paddling. Was just there a few months ago..... what beautiful people!

The Tahitians are sponsored by their state, unlike the Hawaiians. Paddling there is like their national sport and they train hard everyday. It shows and it's why they are always #1 and #2. But we have some good local teams that are competing too. Both Hilo (Keaukaha) and Puna have teams which should be in the top 10. The weather forecast today isn't great for the Kaiwi channel. Due to a surface low to the far north the trade wind flow is disrupted. The paddlers like the trades because it builds some wind chop for them to surf down and the breeze helps keep them cooler. Without the wind the crossing can make for a long race.

Only about 30 minutes until the stream goes live!

Red Bull which is leading at the moment (first time Tahitians aren't leading to the point) has 4 Big Island paddlers and a mix from EDT Tahitian paddlers.

You can also watch on OC16 with Spectrum cable.

Puna Canoe club is currently in about 5th and the battle for first is really tight. The GPS data is starting to come on-line now that they are closer to Oahu.

Big upset for Tahiti. A combo crew with Big Island paddlers and Tahitian paddlers took first in the open division: Red Bull Va'a.

Puna Canoe Club took an amazing 7th place.

A team of 40+ year olds took 6th.
