. How many of you use tax software(Turbo Tax, etc, etc..). So for those of you who like to do your own taxes. I have found a new, or new to me tax software! It's called
http://www.completetax.com. Have any of you tried this software? To file your federal taxes with them cost $29.99, and less than $16.00 to file one's state taxes..
Check it out you might be pleaseantly surprised![

Me, I got an old fashioned tax accountant. He ended up saving me about $2500 two years ago ( I had done my taxes on turbo tax as a test)... just a caution - there are some out of the ordinary deductions that are available that turbo tax, etc doesnt seem to pick up. He cost me $125 that year.
Call me old school but sometimes I think experience wins out over technology. Or maybe its experience needs to go hand in hand with technology.

I don't cut my own hair; I don't do my own dental work; I don't do surgery on myself; etc.; and I certainly don't do my own taxes! Sometimes the cheap is the most expensive!
I have been "double-checking" my CPA the first few years and did my own mock tax return too. He always got my tax lower than the figure I came up with.

last year was the first year that I did my own taxes. I used Turbo Tax, and the federal part of it was right on! But the state part there was some issues. Because of these issues, I got two hundred less from the State than what I had figured through Turbo Tax....go figure!
So I was thinking about returning to my Tax Man. He charges the wife and I(Wife & I file jointly)$250.00. I'd probably do it myself once again, but I have many deduction this year. So I have a decide rather sooner than later....

John - you sound like my brother - he says he does what he does well so he can pay people to do what they do well!

We always have ours done by an IRS certified accountant. My MBA wife does them also. She has always proved better than the accountant as she usually finds and corrects mistakes. However, we still have him do them as it sure is handy if auduted, which we have been through. Boy do the IRS agents hate it when you end up with a no-change audit.
If we had real simple taxes we would just have wifey do them. She is actually very good at that stuff.

Can you guys recommend a good tax accountant in the area? Wife and I live in Hilo, and since we moved here recently and I am technically self-employed, I don't want to do my own taxes this year like I usually do.
Thanks in advance!

The only reason I've done my own taxes in the past is that I've got a very simple return...I'm a government employee, so all of my income is accounted for, I've got no rental properties, no farm property, no subchapter "S" whatever the hell that is, no offshore oil leases, nothing to depreciate, you get the idea. The few things I can deduct are all declared on 1099 forms, or are state and local taxes that I paid, charitable donations, or simple employment-related expenses.
That's all out the window this year, anyway. I got married last year, and the wife uses an accountant, so I'll be using an accountant this year, too.

Came highly recommended to me. I've only used them once and they did okay. It's still pricey, but less than what I paid in CA for a CPA. You may not feel that you need a CPA, but as a self-employed person, maybe it's a good idea?
