You Are The Product - Amazon Edition
#1
Amazon gets its millions of buyers to write product reviews.
It's customers read the reviews when considering a purchase, and many of us use Amazon for that feature, which we provide for them - - free.

Starting in mid-December, Amazon will push sellers to increase the number of video product descriptions, to keep customers watching and to discourage them from migrating to YouTube and other video sites. Amazon video descriptions will display price drops for the item you're viewing. Welcome to Amazon's feature laden black hole, penny price drops to keep you watching, and watching, and watching...

There’s potentially another reason for Amazon to promote the use of video in e-commerce. It now has a way to offer customers discounts for watching ads. In October, Amazon was awarded a patent for “content-based price reductions and incentives.” The patent says that “customers in an electronic environment can be presented with the option to receive advertising, such as audio, video, or interactive content, in order to receive discounted pricing or similar benefits.”

Of course if net neutrality is voted down, any discounts from Amazon might be offset in your New! Unimproved! higher Internet service fees.

Not sure I quite get the point of having people watch an ad for a product in return for getting a discount on it. Besides, lots of people use Amazon reviews to decide about buying things in actual stores.

"We have operators standing by right now and if you call in the next ten minutes not only will we reduce the price to $19.99, we'll send you another one for free plus something you've never wanted for a small additional shipping cost of only $12.99."

Where have I seen this before?
