I am considering making an additional land purchase. Maybe the lava wont flow and Kim Jong Un has his sight set on something other than Hawaii.
Do you think 40th St will eventually become a major access road for Orchid Land out to the highway?
I like the atmosphere now but may consider something on one of the unpaved. I don’t want to find a two lane highway out my front door.
Aloha and Happy New Year to everyone.

My gut tells me that we will all grow old and die before any alternative route is built.

Nothing will change for twenty five to fifty years. Take it as you see it.
Although Puna is the fastest growing area of the island .. it's also the lowest in tax Base..let's get water.. sewer.. and internet/power availible before the four lane hyways happen.

When we looked at numerous lots in OLE in 1980-81, several real estate agents told us that the County had an easement to finish out 40th Ave all the way to Pahoa. I don't have access to any maps at this point ( and no time to hunt for the next several days ) to see if the easement is still in existence. I do know that 40th was made 60' wide, so in that regard the there would be one less obstacle for the County to take it over. I do think the 25-50 year range for it actually happening is pretty accurate.
However, the big problem with 40th is the huge volume of water that crosses it and goes down Pohaku when there are heavy rains upslope. ( There used to be some amazing photos on the OLCA homepage showing what looked like a raging river - don't know if they are still there. ). When Puna Sugar changed the drainage pattern for their Kurtistown sugar fields in the 1930s, it channeled an enormous amount of water through that area. If I remember right, it drains over 200 square miles of
land that averages over 150" of rain a year. 'Normal' rainfall isn't too bad, but those heavy rainfall periods make that section impassable. Land in that area tends to be much cheaper than other parts of OLE for that reason. Beware of a "great deal" on any house or parcel of land until you check out the water path.

We didn't find out about the 60' easement thing until after we were already owners on 40th but we're not worried. Nothing is going to happen within our lifetimes. They've been "putting a light in" at the Shower intersection for 18 months (or was that years?) and so far, no light. At that rate, 40th will be a paved alternate route when people are subsisting on Soylent Green and the OLE HOA has finally whittled itself down to only one board. After the again-elected Billy Kenoi cuts the ribbon opening up the new 40th thoroughfare with it's 25 MPH speed limit, he will disappear into the sky in his tie-dyed-themed hemp-infused hover car, and nobody will ever know why the road was built. And for some reason, the head of the Statue of Liberty will show up on the privately owned Shipman beach and the beaches in lower Puna will look like this:

After Kenoi lands in Honolulu to spend our tax dollars in his favorite "hostess bar", the Honolulu rail transit will make it's first and final voyage: a solid 2.5 miles at only $50 billion per mile (USD to adjusted bitcoin value).
Don't even ask about TMT.

Fact: We won't get one for a very long time, if ever.

Well, they just ran the heavy wires across the intersection for the light. I think that light will be hung by the end of january after they make the 4'th lane permanent by making all the lanes more narrow... Glad I no longer have to drive in that mess. It was bad when the lanes were wide. I see even with the permanent four lanes, they are still going to allow people to try and PASS. Seems like the dashed lines are still there. If I ever have to drive there I'll be driving in the right hand lane only.
