The Hawaii Department of Agriculture is looking for proposals to promote local food consumption (and then production). If you know of anyone in Puna who works in advertising, this might be a good opportunity for their business. There have been numerous threads on Punaweb discussing local food reliance over the years, here's a chance to help do something about it. See the entire proposal at the link below:
The HDOA announces the availability of up to $99,000 in program funds for one project to promote the EAT LOCAL message through a media campaign. The EATLOCAL18_MEDIA campaign requests proposals for a campaign that encourages consumers to increase consumption of locally grown fresh and value-added agricultural products through a media campaign that can include, but will not be limited to, radio, print, retail level, and social media components.
...
The project should move Hawaii towards food self-sufficiency and increased food security.

In my opinion locally grown food, that is vegetables, have taken a big hit due to rat lung worm. I've always been amazed by the astounding quality of locally grown food. So why do people pass it up in favor of scrawny mainland veggies? Rat lung worm. Eliminate that and local food production would have a huge boost. How to do it though? Either by eliminating the pathogen or developing an immunization.

These require research for which no funding is available -- all the money is tied up in mandatory raises and "media outreach campaigns".

How do you immunize against a parasite? Edit: I'm all for developing food security by promoting and eating local foods-just not the snails. [:p]

They have monthly trifexis for dogs, is there no such pill for humans? Are pumpkin seeds/oil effective on lungworm like other ingested parasites? Seems like the state should fund this basic research before funding $99k to advertise local produce.

The Eat Local promotion is for Hawaii, not just Puna District. On the Big Island, most produce is not grown in Puna but in Waimea and Hamakua. On Maui there are the large lettuce, cabbage and onion farms in Kula, on Oahu there is a diverse range of ethnic crops grown on the central plain west of Honolulu.
Those farmers produce 99% of the food grown in Hawaii. None of them have a rat lungworm problem.
The main crops here in Puna are papaya and other fruit. The outer skin is (mostly) not consumed, and if it is, it's smooth and easily washed. You would have make an extremely diligent effort to infect yourself with rat lungworm from Puna grown fruit. You would almost have to will it.
Eat Local promotes fresh locally grown food, most of which is produced far away from the rat lungworm problem. It promotes the availability of food that can be eaten a few days after harvest, not weeks old. The primary sources for Hawaiian grown food provides residents with healthy vitamins and minerals, not deadly viruses.

HB474 the "Rat lung research bill' in the Hawaii House of Reps, passed on 3/2/2018, sent to the State Senate. Companion Bill in the State Senate is SB272, I believe carried over from last Session (2017).
Get on Lorraine Inouye, Kai Kahele, Russell Ruderman and Josh Green about this NOW.
Thank you everyone here.

Please pay attention to this one.
HOTPE, there have been cases RLD outside of Hawaii County, most recently in Maui. This just needs to be solved and controlled and hopefully ended so it doesn't get out of hand.

Flying in onions from Maui seems to defeat the purpose of "local" production.

Look at the legislative history on this issue, then lower your expectations accordingly. (I had to dig a hole to get them low enough.)
