RWR: it's the type of jobs that matter more than the number of jobs. You can't support the infrastructure and government services on minimum wage jobs. Before long you look like Puerto Vallarta: beautiful hotels and condos on the beach and three streets back, slums. Any effort to attract new businesses is instantly smothered by government delays, regulation, and obstructionism - in addition to high energy, land, housing. etc., etc., etc. costs...

I wonder what the "actual" unemployment rate is. My understanding is that the rate is simply the number of people collecting unemployment insurance benefits. It doesn't count those who have exhausted their benefits or don't qualify for benefits or welfare recipients. I could be wrong.

"I think low unemployment is great."

Generally, low unemployment levels are a great economic indicator. But on the other hand, peak low unemployment and peak consumer confidence levels are two data points that have preceded every modern recession.

peak unemployment and peak consumer confidence levels... have preceded every modern recession.

Wouldn't that be because economic indicators go up, right until they come down? No one knows where the top is (or bottom) until after it happens. It's fairly rare for indicators to remain level for an extended period of time.

You are right, I typed that wrong. What I meant to say was that peak low unemployment figures and peak high consumer confidence are two data points that preceded every recession.
