While I would love for Southwest to start service from Hilo to the mainland, I'm pretty sure that Maui and Kona will get it long before we do, if ever. An interisland service, however, looks quite probable if they move in that direction. Southwest did openly mention interisland possibilities in one of their investor conference calls, so it is being considered at some level.

Well it looks like southwest is now telling us that they will probably fly to the Big Island from the west coast. But will it be Kona or Hilo?
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/business...67959.html "The airline also announced that it plans to fly to four cities in Hawaii, not just Honolulu. That decision raises the stakes in a looming competition with Hawaiian Airlines and other carriers that fly to the islands from the West Coast. The Southwest flights are expected to start late this year or early in 2019."

Southwest will be flying to Kona according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser:
http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/04/26...-airports/ The announcement does not mention interisland service, although past statements from Southwest have stated that it is a possibility. That would be Hilo's best shot at a new airline if it ever happens.

Hilo's best shot at a new airline
Right, because what we need is more options for flying to the real airport.

I flew LAX-ITO recently and the plane was half full, if that. So, I won't get my hopes up.

Southwest's flights will be on a larger crappy 737 with even less service !
