PETCO finally opens!

A May 5 grand opening is planned for the Hilo store. Its regular hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays.

It reminds me of a zoo. There are lots of dogs and cats and birds now. Tortoises to come, and many other species they said. We didn’t like seeing terrified dogs getting groomed through the glass, trembling while looking at people watching them. They did have some treats our dogs loved. I guess we’ll be back to see how the store progresses, but we’ll groom our dogs at home.

Great point Kenney - the internet is riddled with Petco grooming horror stories. From nicks and cuts all the way up to death! Caveat Emptor...

Yeah, that’s a big no on Petco. Heck petcos groomers even cooked a dog to death in one of their dryers.

You'd think Petco would seriously reform the grooming angle or get it off the premises. Or at least put it somewhere out of sight. Oh well, I'll still go there to shop for supplies and toys. We groom our own mutts anyway, and they actually enjoy a bath and a trim with the clippers when needed.

I went in again today. The grooming area is right inside the entrance so everybody who walks in has to walk by the grooming area. It kind of reminded me of BI candy, where you can watch them make the confections, or Tex's Drive in making Malasadas, only there are live beings in there. I really think the grooming area should be somewhere with less stimulation for the poor dogs.

I've been told that as far as groomers are concerned, the Hilo store is going about it differently. Grooming has been contracted out to Hilo's Shear Magic Pet Salon. I've not used their services for my dogs, but know dog owners who have and they all highly recommend this business.

The recent spate of news stories about dogs dying in grooming were at Petsmart, not Petco.

Went in yesterday. The only issue I had with the grooming right there, where people can stop and watch (done same way in a Petco we used to live near), is that it makes the dogs nervous.

I did like that they had dog food brands you can't find anywhere else here, or only thru a vet, like Science Diet, Eukanuba, etc. Had lots of dog things you can't find good selections on elsewhere, like 2'-long bully sticks. The grosser the thing, the more dogs want it.

Didn't like the prices. Most things were pretty high.

Felt bad for the conures, bc they were in smallish, brightly-lit cages. But liked that the cages looked like they were in temp-controlled enclosures. There were turtles, budgies (which they are labeling as parakeets), fish, mice, guinea pigs, and a chinchilla. The chinchilla was at back of his enclosure and looked stressed to me. Luckily, no puppies or kittens. The Humane Society has adoption events over at Petco on Kona side; hopefully will have them at this Petco, too.
