My Big Island, my Puna
#1
Aloha,everyone!
I am not on the island yet,my project has to go without me.I live in San Diego and couple of folks at my job keep asking me about Puna and Big Island.(I guess my excitement is contagious).Of course, they have internet and when they decide they want to buy property,I'll refer them to our professionals:each John will have a client.
But so far they "just looking".
So I was thinking it would be nice if the forum members will share information about the area they live.I would love to learn myself. Before this forum I haven't heard of Ninole. But thanks to David now I am less ignorant.
Everything would be interesting.
Thank you in advance for your time.

There was a pretty good thread on this topic in the Building forum called Your Favorite Subdivision.
I've bumped it so you can find it.

It is great to read the different perspectives. So many subdivisions choose from...

When people move here, they find out that it's not mints on the pillow, but that wherever you go, there you are. Just another chapter in life but with a whole lot to learn about other cultures, right?

I guess I feel it's not for me to tell 'em to back off, 'cause you know what Damon? They will find out for themselves on their path if it leads through Puna whether they can make it here or not.

Sure don't mean to offend...hope you take it in the light it was given.[Smile]

Damon, those people, unlike some individuals, have some brains and came up with Puna doinq their own search. They know negatives, but still like it.I am not encouraging them. They wanted to know more, that's it.
"My Puna"-that was for the people who live there notes..,not for me.
Though, having a land here and starting to build my house to be my home,I would assume I have some right to call Puna mine.
And since you mentioned that I don't live here, what about you?
Is Oahu somewhere in Puna?
You even didn't introduce yourself properly to this forum.

There is also a thread called "Introduce yourself". Hundreds have. I am in North San Diego County and have a place in HPP. I DO try and recruit neighbors. That is, I tell people that I really like and who I think have the right spirit and understanding, or who play ukulele, about my place in Puna. I do not speak about my place to others. I keep it pretty quiet. When immature spirits find out about my Puna place from others and ask me about it I tell them it is 15 miles from the business end of a volcano, is in tsunami zone, built on solid lava and it rains 130 inches a year. Then they look at me like I am crazy, which I am, and wander away.

That is the desired result. I really think there should be a sign when you are entering kind of like the one when you are entering Pirates of the Carribean. Something like: Warning -- Here there be Volcanoes! With a skull, with melting lava on the forehead, and crossbones.

We only want highly eccentric people and their enablers here. Not the merely disturbed. Not low level control freaks just bursting on the scene with "fresh" ideas. Not hordes of Southern Californians who will lean on the horn at the first frustration.

We are looking for a strange combination of tender and tough. People tough enough to withstand the negatives of Puna, while expressing tenderness, empathy and aloha at every opportunity.

It really isn't for everybody, nor is the island. It has been said more than one time that the island selects you, not the other way around.

For that reason, there is not much danger that all of my neighbors will accompany me when I make the transition.

I completely agree with Glen.I want only good people to be my neighbors.
Those guys are great. One of them loves growing orchids.
They are very nice and respectful people. If they ask me for more information, why not to help?
It's very interesting that after I bought the land,I found out that someone else on my job had a lot in Puna and wanted to sell it.I gave him my agent's phone #.Later on she offered me a referral fee.I didn't take it.Nothing is wrong about referral fee,I just live by different principles. In my life I met a lot of people who helped me without expecting anything in return.I try to do the same.

Where's your property, StillHope? Are you in Lava Zone 2? (We are.)

I like what Glen reminded us of with the Island choosing who lives here. So far we haven't been spat out!

Today I'm grateful. No lava running in the yard and the sun is shining this morning...it doesn't get any better than this.
