air quality in HPP
#1
At long last, my husband and I are back on the BI. Our rental is in HPP and we have a question about the air quality right now. We see a lot of small particles in the air and don't know if those particles are lava-related (and if our sons should stay in!)or something else altogether. I checked the Hawaii County web site and the last I saw said that the winds were SW. It is bitter sweet to be back--we are happy to be here again, but feel for all the families who have lost everything as well as for the entire community and its loss of such irreplaceable places as the Kapoho Tide Pools.

HPP has been pretty much vog free compared to other parts of the island. Because of our predominate east to north east winds....most of what is coming out of leilani and along the coast is going south and west. The Kona coast has been terrible.

***Forgot to add...I'm in lower HPP close to the coast.

we live in lower HPP, & totally agree. A neighbor around the corner is complaining , he must be more sensitive than we are. All of our windows remain open.

Having talked to many people in mid to upper HPP (15th & up) the air quality has been bad on and off when the trades die down or reverse. As noted, it is very dependant on sensitivity to SO2.

As for seeing particles in the air, usually best not to breathe them regardless if they are fire ash, volcanic fallout, or anything else. Probably best to stay inside or take a recirculated air conditioned trip to elsewhere.

Particles in the air? What do they look like?

Sorry for the delay in responding. We were out all day at Waipio Valley (we walked from the Overlook to the beach and rewarded ourselves with malasadas from Tex) and driving around the island. The particles were so small that you can hardly see them--kind of like when it is barely spitting snow for those of you who have lived on the mainland. None of us seem to be having any sensitivity or suffering any ill effects. So it is business as usual unless you tell us to batten down the hatches. Thanks for your help!

Today was pretty good but I am down at the bottom of Paradise and a couple few days ago the air got so bad by mid-morning that I had to close everything up and turn on the air purifier. It didn't really seem to help and then I opened the door and it was so strong outside that it knocked me back so I guess it really did make a big difference. These days with all the volcanic action we're at the mercy of the wind.
