What is this moth?

Anyone know? We've got a bunch of them at our place in HPP.. their wingspan is easily 5 inches. It's not a sphinx moth as far as I can tell, which is the only thing that comes up when you search online for "big" Hawaii moths. Smile

TIA

Maybe it's a butterfly and that's why a search for moths isn't turning anything up. There is a distinction, but I don't know what it is. Good luck. It's beautiful whatever it is.

Okay, here's an update: it's a rare ascalapha odorata! Also known as the "Black Witch". How cool is that?

It is indeed a moth as you said, and I found it at this website: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~ak5t-kmn/hawaii.htm
